INTRODUCTION (top)
In this section of the
Growth Online
Knowledge Base, we
present our original thoughts, as well as links to our
original articles on the
Personal
Growth topic of "Connecting to Spirit." (If you wish,
you can see our
other Personal Growth
categories.) First we speak about the
nature of the spirit is for the individual, and then our
purpose in life relative to the spirit.
Then we discuss the three central spiritual methods of
connecting to Spirit: Consecration, Moving to the Depths,
and Surrender. Consecration is to open
to the Force before engaging in an activity.
Moving to the Depths (or
Concentration) is a movement away from the surface existence
to a deeper existence within. In the deepest depths one
discovers the Personal Evolving Soul.
Surrender is to offer all one's
work, one's life to the Divine Force and Intent. (It occurs
generally after one has connected with the Personal Evolving
Soul.) The recommended approach for the average person is to
begin consecrating every act to enable magnificent results,
and over time move the consciousness into the depths, which
will enable better consecration. When you reach the Evolving
Soul in the depths, then you can begin a life of Surrender
to the Divine.
We then cover many
other topics related
to connecting to the spirit, including aspiration,
faith, oneness, delight of Being, and others.)
THE
NATURE
OF SPIRIT FOR THE INDIVIDUAL (top)
On Spirituality
Spirituality is in its
essence an awakening to the inner reality of our being, to a
spirit, self, soul ... an inner aspiration to enter into
contact with the greater Reality ... a turning, converting,
a transformation of our whole being ... into a new self, a
new nature. (Sri Aurobindo)
On Spirituality
Spirituality is the unfolding
of this Divinity (or the Spirit) within us. (MSS)
Nature's Four Ways to the Inner Life
The course
of Nature has followed four ways to open up our inner lives
-- through religion, occultism, spiritual thought, and inner
spiritual realization. Only the last is decisive.
(Paraphrase of Sri Aurobindo)
Stages of Knowing Spirit
It is one thing to
have knowledge of spirit. It is another to feel spirit as
experienced perceptive knowledge. It is yet another to feel
it as sensations, in our nerves. We know it truly when we
embody it in the physical, in our bodies, fulfilling a key
objective of spirit's evolutionary emergence through matter.
Spirit and Man
The Spirit has moved from its
high pedestal and has journeyed to the door of man,
stationing Itself there. Will man turn his attention to It?
Will he find the Spirit as attractive as the Spirit finds
man attractive? (MSS)
The Spiritual Individual
The Spiritual
Individual lives IN the world, guided by the Psychic Being,
which gives inner strength, power, inspiration, and
guidance, depending not on the social influence, nor
withdrawing from that society to be alone in spirit. Life
will oblige him at every step along the way.
Nature and Purpose of Spirit
In the deepest
recesses of your being within you find spirit.
Sri Aurobindo, the Indian sage and seer says that
spirituality is an awakening to the inner reality of our
being, to a spirit, to the true self, to the soul within, in
order that we may be able to enter into contact with the
greater Spiritual Reality.
Connecting to the Spiritual Reality, the Being is
accomplished by establishing a connection within yourself to
your deepest parts, to your soul parts. By connecting
within, finding the spirit there, the Being within you,
enables not only the experience of one's own soul space but
readily connects you with the greater ocean of spirit
contained in the Divine reality.
The Divine created this universe in the first place, to
extend his powers in life so that these spiritual attributes
and powers can be utilized by all of the inhabitants of the
globe; including Peace, Power, Strength, Delight, Love,
Beauty, Knowledge, Truth, and others.
Discovering the Spirit Within
In this
interview Roy Posner, President of Growth Online, discusses
how we can find the spirit within us to enable infinite
delight as well as infinite accomplishment and success in
life.

Connecting to Spirit as Householder, Aspirant, or In
Between It is true that we are slowly evolving from
mental to spiritual beings. In fact, as mental beings, we
can now consciously make the decision and effort to connect
with spirit in any area of our lives. By connecting with
Spirit, we experience a continuous silence and Presence
within; we tend to move from selfishness to selflessness and
self-givingness; and we tend to have the wherewithal to see
the true truths unfolding around us to make the right
decisions and take to the right actions that lead to
powerful positive results. We also experience an ongoing joy
and delight of being.
Can all of us simply take to this spiritual-oriented way
of life without any distinctions in our approach? It would
seem that it would be best to have a variety of approaches
to accommodate differences in people. Therefore, let's
consider two approaches toward the spirit; one from the
perspective of the 'householder'; and the other from the
perspective of the 'spiritual aspirant'. The former tries to
bring spirit into life in order to create success, harmony,
and well-being in family life; the latter directs his life
to his own physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual growth
and evolution. One can also live a life of spirit at levels
in between.
The householder takes to the spirit by opening to the
spiritual Force in order to create a happy and prosperous
family existence. As a result, life continually comes under
one's control. That individual opens to the Force before
major activities, such as an important business meeting; or
in order to resolve a problem, such as issues of money,
health of a family member, a child's education, an upcoming
social event, and the long-term security and harmony of the
family. By opening to the spiritual Force, vast material
results come in an extraordinary short period of time. We
experience a constant stream of miraculous-like events in
which new opportunities suddenly arise, serious problems are
suddenly overcome, difficult challenges are easily met -- as
the Force brings life around us under control. I call this
phenomenon "life response."
The spiritual Aspirant on the other hand seeks the change
and transformation of his very nature. This individual seeks
to discover move from the surface of life to the depths
within, to come out of the essential Ignorance of man, and
to infuse all parts of his being -- physical, vital, and
mental -- with the spirit. He seeks to come in contact with
his Soul within and with the Force around him, eventually
surrendering all of his works his very life to the
Divine Will. Through this effort, his nature changes, the
world around him is changed, and he becomes an instrument
for the spiritualization of society, culminating in a Divine
life on earth. He is living an adventurous life of
consciousness and joy. He (or she of course) becomes a
pioneer in the spiritual evolution of humanity.
If we are serious about connecting with spirit in life,
we can do so as a Householder or the Spiritual Aspirant, or
any point in between. Each person who feels an inner call is
ready to move one or several steps beyond his current
condition. He can determine what his life status is -- as
husband/wife, father/mother, worker, etc -- and determine
his approach to the spirit. Whatever level we choose, life
will consist of a never-ending succession of miraculous-like
experiences in which we feel an ever-increasingly intense
joy and delight of being.
How Spirit Expresses
The Spirit expresses as
Oneness, Peace, Integral Knowledge, Truth, Power, Delight,
Love, Beauty, Infinite (expression, non-Time bound
expression, amongst others.
-When we move to our higher
consciousness, we enable these expressions of spirit to
enter into the details of our lives life.
-When we move
within to the depths of our being, away from the surface,
when we connect to the transcendent Force, these are
spiritual ways of enabling higher consciousness. Just below
these are the life ways, through goodness, self-givingness,
humility, compassion, openness, and a hundred other high
values of life.
Signs of the Spirit Acting in One's Life
Here
are 12 indicators that the spirit is actively working in
your life.
If what is considered impossible in ordinary life becomes
possible in one's life.
If what you must go out and seek comes unasked towards
you; and if those who are socially superior to you in status
come to meet you instead of asking you to come and meet them
If the time required to get work done gets abridged and
if what requires a long time gets done in a short time
If work that requires money and influence gets done
without using money or influence
If your income witnesses increase by many times over a
short duration
If in spite of doing foolish things you are not harmed
and your work does not get spoiled or you do not
suffer from monetary loss
If a little token effort gets you disproportionately big
results
If you as a single individual can achieve what requires
the combined effort of many people or whole organizations
If people change their decisions and attitudes in
response to your prayer or requests
If the weather obeys your Will and behaves as you wish
If whatever beneficial work you do starts expanding in
volume and output
If whether you pray or not your requirements are
fulfilled and your problems are solved
If anyone of these signs are there in your life then know
for sure that The Spirit is active in your life and that
Grace is with you. If all twelve signs are there you may be
one of the lucky ones destined to meet God face to face and
be in his Divine presence (by MSS, slightly modified)
OUR
PURPOSE:
TO EMBODY SPIRIT (top)
Untitled
The purpose of life, our lives, is to
rediscover the power, the Force that created the universe in
the first place, and to use that power in our lives to
transform ourselves, fulfilling our and the universe's
ultimate evolutionary purpose. That purpose is the Delight
of existence.
The Vastness Beyond Our Limited Reality
Imagine an individual who lives in a beautiful region. He
has explored all of its stunning beauty, its great variety
of hills, mountains, bays, estuaries, marches, fauna and
flowers. He is amazed at the diversity and magnificence of
his home town, and knows of no other. He then finds out that
there are dozens of such areas around the world, each with
their own unique beauty and fascination. He sits there
dazed, overwhelmed by the fact that there can be so many
other wonder-filled places besides his own. He then goes on
to experience and enjoy their magnificence, and over time he
is dazzled by the life he then lives. Similarly we can
imagine our own life, which we view as so special and
unique, so magnificent and rich, as but a trifle of the life
we can live compared to the wonder we can know when we are
transformed into a spirit-based future evolutionary being.
Untitled
Humans fulfill the purpose of creation
when we find our higher nature; when we perceive spirit in
our lives, fulfilling the purpose for which the Divine
manifest a universe -- delight of being.
Untitled
Our role is to find spirit in life; to
find the spiritual Being in ourselves (whose origin is the
Divine) in the Becoming, i.e. the activities, actions,
circumstances, events, and acts of life. We evolve and
evolve life by discovering the Being in the Becoming. In
that process we discover the Infinite of the Divine in the
finite details of our existence, and the Timelessness of the
Divine in the time-bound moments and periods we experience
in life.
Availability of Spirituality for this Who Have the
Call, the Aspiration for It
-Religious worship is for
all. Spirituality is for those who have the call.
-There was a time when spirituality was meant for one who
could go to the forest, sleep on a bed of nails, etc. Now
since 1956 when the Force descended, the right to enjoy a
higher spirituality is waiting at the door of everyone,
provided he has aspiration. By aspiration it means the
aspiration of the Soul. (MSS)
Untitled
Our ultimate purpose is to have both
the individual and universal consciousness, i.e. to see the
world as the Divine sees it. (Paraphrase of The Mother)
Experience Divine
To feel the Divine Presence
just once in life, can change one's life forever.
Man's Role in the Evolution Towards Higher Planes of
Existence The movement among the planes (from matter
to life to mind and beyond) is due to a upward movement of
consciousness that ends in something new. [There is a
creative outcome.] It's drive is Consciousness-Force and the
power of the Real Idea. It mostly happens on its own in
Nature. Now man, the self-conscious being, can find the
spirit within himself, by discovering the psychic being, and
by turning Ignorance to Knowledge, enabling him to embody
the spirit, which will aid in manifesting further movements
of evolution upward into new and higher planes of existence.
However, to do this fully, he will need to transcend his
limiting Mind and open to Supermind to enable the greatest
power of reversal and new emerging existence.]
Our Individual and Universal Purpose
Our true
self can serve a universal as well as an individual purpose.
(Paraphrase of Sri Aurobindo) E.g. if one develops the inner
capacity to perceive and realize this, one could change the
reality for the society around one, either inwardly and
outwardly. In that sense there are many ways we can become a
universal instrument.
God, Brahman, the Reality is Evolving
Normally we consider God
as something distant and
apart from ourselves.
Rarely do we think of
the Divine as immanent
in the world, let alone
evolving in the
universe.
To address this issue,
let us begin
with a bit of metaphysics.
The ultimate conception
of existence is an
omnipresent Reality that exists in all planes -- from an Infinite
consciousness 'above' in
the Unmanifest down
through matter, life,
and mind in the manifest
universe. This Reality
-- this
ultimate conception of
what is contained
in all planes Unmanifest
and Manifest -- is known
as 'Brahman' in the East
and 'The Absolute' in
the West. Most will
settle for 'God,' though
that conception can be
quite limiting.
But how then is this omnipresent Reality; this God,
Brahman, Absolute evolving? To answer that
question, we need to
understand the 'Process
of Creation.' To begin
with there is an
ineffable, immutable,
infinite consciousness
that always was, is, and
always will be. It is
the Reality in its first
stage; before creation.
This Infinite has then
extended itself into a
field of manifest
entities. It extended
its own infinite being,
consciousness, and
delight into a universal
field of distinct forces
and forms. To do so, it
rendered a creating
plane of Truth
Consciousness, and from
it, formulated the
dividing capacity of
Mind, through which
emerged the Energies
that are the source of
all forces and distinct
material life forms in
space and time. This
second movement can be
thought of as the
Involutionary process.
Thus in the first stage
there is a
decent/involution from an Infinite
consciousness to
Supermind, Mind, and
then Energy; and a
second stage of
ascent/evolution in the universe from Energy to Matter to
Life and Life Forms to
Mind, the latter
expressing mainly
through we human beings.
The Reality is then all of the
planes of the involutionary and evolutionary processes
together. Brahman/The Reality/God, is not only timeless,
spaceless being, but extended Itself to forms of its Force
in creation. In other words Brahman, God, the Reality also
became this life. It is thus the Unmanifest and Manifest,
and their integral relationship. This is the ultimate
conception of Reality afforded to Man.
Moreover, since we humans in the
universe are an extension of that Reality, and since we are
evolving, then God the Divine, Brahman, the Absolute Reality
is evolving as well. As we bring higher consciousness to
bear in our lives, we evolve, as does God the Infinite. As
we become more conscious -- overcoming our personal
limitations and wanting qualities; find our spirit and soul
within; commune with the transcendent Divine, bring
the that Higher Power into the details of our lives -- we
not only uplift ourselves and life, but enable the Reality
itself to evolve through creation.
We are then the instrument of
God's evolution. As we evolve, so does the Reality, Brahman,
which is in and of every and all things. When we connect to
our higher nature, we serve the evolution of the Reality, as
it seeks to render its own spiritual attributes of Silence,
Oneness, Truth, Wisdom, Power, Love, Beauty, and Delight
into this universe of forms.
Untitled
One
ultimate goal of becoming the
evolutionary spiritual being is to overcome the limitations
of the physical consciousness and the subconscious.
Untitled
We are developing the consciousness of
existence as the Divine sees things. (Paraphrase of The
Mother)
Untitled
Our destiny is to become the
supramentalized evolutionary spiritual being.
Untitled
Ultimately people have confidence in
themselves, their families, society, not in the Divine. Only
in extreme moments of danger, or deep anguish is their a cry
to the Divine.
Ultimately it must be the foundation of our existence, to
enable the infinite possibilities of life. (Paraphrase of
MSS)
"God and Spirituality are for those who have knocked at
the doors of the Absolute and found entry. To all the rest
of us, Spirit is unknown. We worship the gods another person
has discovered." (MSS)
Untitled
The individual in life has his
individual self. The spiritualized evolutionary being
becomes an individually realized Self, a realized universal
Self, and a realized transcendent Self.
Changing the World from Within
An individual
can change the course of history from within. You can also
accomplish the same thing by overcoming a corresponding
limited quality in one's self. Perhaps these are the same
thing.
Overcoming Outer Conflict by Altering Corresponding
Limiting Aspects Within Ourselves
Two nations are in
conflict. We would like to see this end or resolve itself in
a higher way. We can enable this possibility by discovering
a corresponding conflict or negative aspect in ourselves,
which astonishingly can overcome the wider problem.
The question then rises; why is this so? It is because we
are not only individual beings who can know our True Selves
and thus enable our True Power over our lives from within
ourselves, but we are also Universal beings, who can impact
the outer world from within.
The universe, the whole of life reflects in a macrocosm,
consisting of society, the earth, and the cosmos; which we
embody as a microcosm within us. Thus at any point we can
change our corresponding nature to affect the Whole.
A Human Being
The Absolute's first aspect is
Being, i.e. Spirit. I am a human, a semi-conscious form
inherently of Spirit. This now I don't know; but when I
fully do, I will be fully conscious; i.e. I will truly be a
human Being.
Highest Instruments of Real Ideas
Real Ideas
are streaming down from Spirit. By attaining our highest
consciousness we become the best possible instruments for
their successful unfolding into Creative New Realities in
life.
Potential of Endless Life through Spirit
Man
has prolonged life by his knowledge of physiology and
medicine, but has not achieved an endlessness to life. His
conquest of pain is great, but it is not complete. Also, he
has achieved this mastery over life and pain by the lower
forces of Matter - Medicine - not by a superior force.
One's Spirit Connecting to Society's Spirit Enables
Boom When a writer or the leader or other skilled
individual has touched the Spirit in his own inspiration in
his field, it touches the Spirit of the population also.
This individual Spirit calling the social Spirit creates a
live ever-increasing movement, a boom, e.g. of sales or
popularity.
Anyone who is patient enough to invoke the Spirit in his
own life, who acts on his own faith in Spirit rather than
his own individual capacities to succeed, will witness such
a boom in his own life. How far it will rise depends upon
how far he is in tune with the Spirit of the Times.
With the spiritual Force ever-increasing in the
atmosphere, this phenomenon of interrelated Spirit is
ever-more likely to burst out into boom. (Paraphrase of MSS)
Moving from the Surface to the Inner Being to
Reorient One's Life to the Spirit
Man lives
mostly in his surface mind, life and body, but there is an
inner being within him with greater possibilities to which
he has to awake - for it is only a very restricted influence
from it that he receives now and that pushes him to a
constant pursuit of a greater beauty, harmony, power and
knowledge. The first process of Yoga is therefore to open
the ranges of this inner being and to live from there
outward, governing his outward life by an inner light and
force. In doing so he discovers in himself his true soul
which is not this outer mixture of mental, vital and
physical elements but something of the Reality behind them,
a spark from the one Divine Fire. He has to learn to live in
his soul and purify and orientate by its drive towards the
Truth the rest of the nature. There can follow afterwards an
opening upward and descent of a higher principle of the
Being. (Sri Aurobindo)
Formula of Discovering the Spirit Within
Concentrate your focus away from the surface of life and
move to the depths within. A new inner poise, as well as a
calm and peace will gradually get established. Once it is
established, consistently consecrate act, events, and
situation by opening to the Force, which will enable
abundant life response around you, leading to accelerated
results, achievement, and success.
This will amaze
you, and greatly energize you. It will also have the effect
of opening the pathways to the deepest parts, the Inner
Being, the True Self, the evolving soul. Then if you are
lucky, you will actually move through this wider opening
within and really experience the Inner Being, the personal
evolving soul on a more continuous basis, which is, in
essence, the first great opening and stage for an individual
on the road to one's ultimate evolutionary possibility.
Nature and Purpose of Spirit
In the deepest
recesses of your being within you find spirit.
Sri Aurobindo, the Indian sage and seer says that

Perceptions of the
Spiritual Life1 We think of spiritual life
as something strange, exotic, interfering with our happiness; in other
words, to be kept at bay. But it's really the same as the regular life,
except there is a continuous inner joy bordering on bliss, and besides,
everything works out perfectly in the world around you. It's just
regular life with a wonderful twist; not unlike a heart-felt
relationship vs. one of convenience.
Perceptions of the
Spiritual Life2 Have you ever though that
spiritual life is in one sense simply higher levels of workings of our
minds, i.e. spiritual mind, enabling knowledge to come without thinking.
Untitled We cannot rely on other
people's descriptions of the Divine, God, the Absolute. We must have our
own experience. (Paraphrase of MSS)

Untitled How to become this
evolutionary spiritual being? To change into the supramental
evolutionary being, who is utterly different from our current human
functioning, we will need to first change the orientation of our basic
nature, and then begin to shift our center of consciousness from our
current vital and mental based center to a higher spiritual based
center, above mind, in spiritual mind, and above that to the supramental
realms of truth consciousness; and then open to the supramental Force in
all aspect of our being to transform them into the supramental
evolutionary being. At that pointy all of the limitations of the current
human functioning would disappear. Sri Aurobindo calls this process the
triple transformation.
Untitled The notion of time and
space, subjectivity and objectivity, whether things are concrete or not,
are of the old species. Then Mother says that these are all breaking
down as she is becoming the new species. These aspects were necessary as
part of the mental perception, which is no longer needed.
(Paraphrase of The Mother)
Changing Our Nature
Requires Changing Our Awareness
We
see who we are, and we know we can be more than what we have been. Yet,
how to make ourselves different from the foolishness of our past? The
truth be told is that we cannot change anything truly until we learn
about our deepest nature, the highest spiritual truths, and then
implement our existence from that new found awareness. A wise man has
said: "Trying to change what you get from life without first changing
what you know about life is like putting on dry clothes over wet ones
and then wondering why you keep shivering."
Reversing One's Folly through Spirit
Life tells a man
that it is difficult if not impossible to reverse the current plight he
finds himself in because of his earlier folly. In Spirit, acts of
earlier folly can be reversed through recognition of past error, and a
deeply felt emotion of that recognition. The Spirit tells him,
"If you genuinely regret in your emotions the
folly of an earlier act, or reverse your past attitudes that led to that
folly now in your understanding and feelings, the results of your folly
-- such as huge debt, lack of work, failed marriage, etc -- will fully,
quickly, and irreversibly dissolve, liberating you forever."
Spirit corrects physical FACTS by the reversal of TRUE feelings deeply
realized.
(Paraphrase of MSS)
Nature vs. Spirit's Way to Overcome Problems, Knots of the Past
Unless one consciously digs them up and holds them up to the descending
Light, the problems and knots of the past have to undo themselves by the
negative impact of life events. This is Nature's way. The first, the
spiritually conscious approach, is preferable, in terms of greater
speed, joy, and great results, undoing the burdens of the past ways.
(Paraphrase of MSS)
Family, Friends, and the Divine
For some the Spirit beckons at our door as a response to our call,
awaiting our answer to It in return. However, we love the Divine only
from a distance; and though our love is true, we love our families and
friends more. It is there we hide ourselves when our call is answered.
Can we shed our reservation and let the Spirit emerge in our lives?
(Paraphrase of MSS)
Replacing Vital and
Mental Energy with Spiritual Energy; and Techniques for Its Deployment
Spiritual energy is superior to vital or mental energy. In a work
replace mental energy with spiritual energy and the result will be
greater, just as replacing the oil lamp by the electric lantern.
Spiritual atmosphere accomplishes more by its silent presence than
mental atmosphere.
Imagine the CEO present at the dispatch of a shipment, instead of the
floor supervisor. A lot more gets done. [He brings a greater power for
effectivity.] While you are reading, if you can, you can give up the
mental intelligence in favour of spiritual intelligence. Then you read
faster, understand better and are able to reproduce it with greater
effectivity.
For every skill, capacity, ability, talent, energy, faculty, tool or
instrument, there is a corresponding spiritual one. Using the spiritual
counterpart, one ends up with far greater results.
In each instance
you can evoke a corresponding method spiritual faculty and employ it,
such as the method of concentration in the depths down to the evolving
soul, or consecration, i.e. offering of the event to a Higher
Power, or even (e.g.) sending the Spirit to the destination, such as
imagining the Spirit being there at the meeting before one arrives there
one's self. (MSS, somewhat modified)
CENTRAL
METHODS OF CONNECTING TO SPIRIT
(Consecration, Concentration, Surrender, etc.)
(top)
Three Movements to the Spirit
Three central methods of connecting to the Spirit are Consecration,
Moving to the Depths, and Surrender.
Consecration is to open
to the Force before engaging in an activity.
Moving to the
Depths (or Concentration) is a movement away from the
surface existence to a deeper existence within. In the deepest depths
one discovers the
Personal Evolving Soul.
Surrender is to offer all one's
work, one's life to the Divine Force and Intent. (It occurs generally
after one has connected with the Personal Evolving Soul.) The
recommended approach for the average person is to begin consecrating
every act to enable magnificent results, and over time move the
consciousness into the depths, which will enable better consecration.
When you reach the Evolving Soul in the depths, then you can begin a
life of Surrender to the Divine.
Central
Stages and Methods
The road to transformation can begin with a movement from the surface of
life to the depths. That movement from the outer to the inner is a
focused concentration within. Such inner concentrated status enables us
to experience the world in its myriad of possibility, and integrality.
We are also better able to perceive the Divine Force in the atmosphere.
When we invoke that Force in the events and circumstances of our lives
we begin the process of consecration which enables subtle and causal
life response. At some point the inner focus deepens and we can
eventually touch the personal evolving soul, the Psychic Being, where we
discover the Bliss of existence. At that point we are ready to move to
the next stage of Surrender, where all of our life is a continual
self-giving to the Divine Purpose and Will. So the central methods and
stages are concentration, consecration, a deeper concentration to the
psychic, and surrender.
Formula for Living Life
If you continually move your focus from the surface of life to a
concentration within in the depths of your being, and you consistently
open to the Force before acts or events, your life will be one of
endless wonder, miracle, perfection, results, and delight of being. It
is the simplest formula for life that we can suggest.
Choosing Inner Methods
Concentration within to enable a powerful result is easier when there is
time to gather one's self. If there is little time one can offer, i.e.
consecrate the event to the Divine and leave the result as what may. If
one's very life is
consecrated and surrendered to the Spirit, then one can easily
shift to the right method as needed as the fundamental nature is already
shifted to the Divine overall.
Concentration,
Consecration, Surrender; and the Personal Evolving Soul
Concentration is a movement away from living on the surface of life,
where the senses dominate, to a focus within. Consecration is to defer
all action in life to a higher consciousness [i.e. the Force] rather
than our self of ego. Surrender is the willed decision to move one's
entire life in a whole different direction; that direction being a
never-ending life of self-giving and surrender to the Divine Will.
The psychic [the
personal evolving soul] is engaged when there is consecration. It begins
to flower when surrender begins, and its is in full bloom as surrender
unfolds.
Concentration,
Consecration, and Surrender to Move the Outer Life What are the inner methods
that can move the outer life? In concentration there is a movement from
an idea inside to a created reality outside. In consecration there is an
opening to the higher power and force to perfect an event or overcome a
difficulty, enabling that Force to effect the event, situation, or
problem in the outer world. In surrender there is a general giving of
one's self to the spirit so that it effects the outer whenever and
however it sees fit.
Consciousness & Being
-
Consciousness is
the conscious experience of Being.
-
Being is the Self
of Existence. (MSS)
Process of Creation + Consecration + Inner Life is Unfailing
The vision of what you want to achieve, the decision to
carry it out, the right attitudes, and the right actions
through consecrated acts will be unfailingly successful,
enabling rapid results. (Also in the depths one will
perceive the subtleties of right aspiration, decision,
attitudes, actions, etc.)
Consecration Enables
Depths & Heights
It is too difficult for an individual to go directly deep
into the depths to the subliminal and the soul, or burst
through mind directly to spirit above. Consecration which
gives us access to spirit, so that we can apply it to life
to enable instantaneous miraculousness, causal abundance,
spiritual qualities, et al. also clears the way further into
the depths, which in turn enables us to rise in the heights.
Invoking the Spirit
When you want to invoke the Spirit, sit down, close your eyes -- it may
not be necessary -- stop moving the body, don't talk, DON'T THINK. A
stillness descends on the mind. The stillness grows into a QUIET, a
calm, and finally becomes SILENCE. Silence is an aspect of the Spirit.
As Silence is one aspect of the Spirit, Peace, Unity, Truth, Knowledge,
Power, Beauty, Love, Joy, Infinity and Eternity are also aspects of
Spirit. As soon as Silence descends, a great power develops. You feel
like getting up and running. When Peace enters you, you see it is full
of energy. Light entering the mind answers unresolved questions. Beauty
makes you lose yourself. Joy thrills. Love fills the heart. In practice
ONLY one aspect enters you.
Most people cannot keep quiet. They jump up and act. That is the end of
it.
Once some aspect of Spirit descends, one has to be extraordinarily
PATIENT till many other aspects also descend on him. At a certain
moment, the inner strength becomes sufficient to raise a voice. That
voice is the inner human voice, calling the Spirit or the Mother who is
the Mother of Spirit. That call releases a spiritual peace, unattainable
even in death. It enters the nerves, fills the cells of the body, i.e.
the very Being. After such a call is saturated, the inner Spirit itself
begins to call the outer Spirit. It is Jivatma calling Paramatma. It is
the Individual becoming the Eternal. Man, at that moment, ceases to be a
MAN. He becomes the Divine. (MSS, modified slightly & abridged)
Milestones on the Road to our Ultimate Evolutionary
Possibility
The roadmap to our evolutionary destiny passes through these milestones.
We begin by offering acts and activities and problems of life to the
Divine Force; which in turn enables us to make a link our inner being
within, which guides us to our truer nature and behavior, opens us to
the descents of intuition and revelation, and connects us to universal
force and powers; which leads us deeper within to our True Self, our
personal evolving soul; which leads to a realization that we should now
live our lives completely dedicated to the Divine Will and Purpose,
which is a life of surrender; which opens the portals to infinite
possibilities in life, and establishes the foundation for the ultimate
transformations to our supra-human functioning.
Supports for One's Inner
Method
Prayer, consecration and surrender are central methods. Once one is
adopted, there are many things that can be done to augment the result.
Implementing values like physical cleanliness, vital calmness, social
harmony, psychological goodwill, absolute truthfulness, purity of
motive, etc. all create conditions for the Force to descend in greater
measure when you call. (MSS)
Untitled Consecration, though not
easy is for the beginner devotee; while surrender is for those whose
very lives are committed to progress and spiritual evolution.

What
consecration begins, surrender completes and consummates. (MSS)
Methods that Enable the Practicality of the Infinite
We can
move life outside us in a great way if we
learn to concentrate on spirit. When we are involved in an act or a
situation or a possibility, such as a client or we are applying for a
bank loan, we can find spirit deep within in our soul space and up above
by opening to the Force. When the concentration reaches a calm that
grows to a deep profound richness, then life moves
on the outside beyond our wildest dreams. We have come to the point that
enables the infinite to emerge from the finite. Learning to tend the
Within and the opening to the Force above are the instruments of this
"practicality of the infinite."
Concentration, Consecration, Psychic, Surrender, Total
Result
-The sequence of progress of the methods along the spiritual
path are: concentration, consecration, discovery of soul,
i.e. the psychic, and Total result.
-One moves to the
inner Self through concentration.
-One further finds the personal evolving soul as a result of
action of consecration
-For higher consecration one needs higher concentration.
(Paraphrase of MSS)
Accomplishing Infinitely
by Acting on the Universe Contained Inside Ourselves
For 10,000 years we lived our lives based on our perception of physical
space and measured time, which the Internet now threatens to abridge to
a considerable degree. And yet the deeper inner consciousness of an
individual can contain the entire universe within himself at any moment,
negating space and time altogether. E.g. he can take actions from those
depths, using that Force, enabling life to instantly respond up to an
infinite degree from anywhere on earth within seconds. Even the Internet
is a scratch of the surface compared to the accomplishment and joy that
can emanate from this timeless, spaceless, infinite existence that we
can contain from within.
Inner Leadership that Enables Spiritual Life
In one
sense it seems relatively easy to live the spiritual life because the
path has been laid out; e.g. moving to the depths, opening to the Force,
etc. The reality however is that most everything in the being opposes
it. That is why there needs to be a welling up of aspiration, a
dedication to the Spiritual Quest, and the tending of conscious inner
leadership, which organizes the quest,
facilitating the necessary transitions.
On Concentration
Concentration
is the means by which the individual soul identifies itself with and
enters any form, state or psychological self-manifestation of the Self.
(Sri Aurobindo)
Concentration
The method
to establish a permanent connection with the depths within is through a
focused, all inclusive concentration.
Self-Limitation
(Concentration) & Self-Absorption as Powers of Consciousness
-We know from our own experience that when we concentrate our attention
on a particular object - be it a thought, a feeling, sensation, external
object or event - our attention is simultaneously drawn away from other
fields of perception so that we may not display the normal awareness of
what is going on around us and we may not respond to external stimuli as
we do in a normal waking state. We know that this apparent lack of
awareness and responsiveness are the result of a conscious
self-limitation or concentration of our attention on a particular field.
Concentration or self-limitation is an inherent power of
consciousness.
-Self-absorption
of consciousness-force so that it is not at all manifest in surface
behaviour is also an inherent power of consciousness. [E.g.
Consciousness exists in Matter, but it is self-absorbed there, and thus
not-detectable in the surface.] (MSS)
Surrender
Instead of
us doing the work and relying on our own talents, if we allow the Divine
to bring out our talents in that work, the end result is seen in the
beginning itself. This is surrender. [MSS, slightly modified.]

Article on Surrender
Untitled
We fail to
see the truth and oneness of Brahman because we live on the surface of
life. Not living in the depth we live in our minds which only sees the
part and not the whole. When we move deep within, away from the surface,
and rise above mind to spiritual mind and supermind, we will know
Brahman in its Oneness; i.e. see the Becoming in terms of the Being, the
Many in terms of the One, the Universe in terms of the pre-universe of
Existence, Conscious-Force, Delight, Time in terms of Timelessness,
three dimension of time (past, present, and future) as one, and the
resolution or even the non-existence of the contradictions of Nature.
Discovering a
Permanent Station Within
In order
to go within, learn to concentrate and be still; i.e. shift your
consciousness from the surface of what is around you until you find a
point within yourself where you have established an inner poise. Remain
there, and try to keep that center in all of your actions. At a further
point in your life realize that this inner status is a spiritual
status. Feel the silence and spirit within. Continually center yourself
there until it is your fundamental poise of existence. One step
further is from that inner center continually open to the Force that is
there in the Atmosphere before undertaking any act. Life will now
respond positively each time to the invocation of that Power. If you are
so lucky you may also discover further along this path your "personal
evolving soul" in the deepest depths of your being. Now you have begun
to find the deepest meaning to your existence, your soul purpose in
life.
Two Ways to Spirit
We can know spirit by bursting through mind, through knowledge born of
silence, light, illumination, intuition, and revelation. One can also
open directly to the spirit by opening to the spiritual Force that is
around us everywhere. By opening to the Force consistently in life, we
can make all of life a dynamic field of its infinite power and grace, as
it descends into our lives, enabling infinite possibilities around us to
emerge. Open to the Force, and everything in your daily life works out
perfectly, even miraculously.
Untitled
We can
learn to live in the depths or stand in the light of the spirit above so
that we can experience -
-the timelessness
of the eternal beyond the changes of time
-the oneness and continuity of the past and future as it relates to the
present (i.e. the experience of the present not in isolation but in
oneness with its precedent past and its unfolding future.)
-the unfolding of moments of eternal timelessness in the ever-present.
Moving from the
Surface to the Inner Being to Reorient One's Life to the Spirit
Man lives mostly in his surface mind, life and body, but there is an
inner being within him with greater possibilities to which he has to
awake - for it is only a very restricted influence from it that he
receives now and that pushes him to a constant pursuit of a greater
beauty, harmony, power and knowledge. The first process of Yoga is
therefore to open the ranges of this inner being and to live from there
outward, governing his outward life by an inner light and force. In
doing so he discovers in himself his true soul which is not this outer
mixture of mental, vital and physical elements but something of the
Reality behind them, a spark from the one Divine Fire. He has to learn
to live in his soul and purify and orientate by its drive towards the
Truth the rest of the nature. There can follow afterwards an opening
upward and descent of a higher principle of the Being. (Sri Aurobindo)
Into the
Subliminal Mind to Enable Consciousness Over Force & the Evolution of
Man
A further opportunity has moved to Man to move into the subliminal [the
inner] mind. It is not Nature's slow movement we witness here. It is not
a world made of Force. This is a world of consciousness. We can say it
is a world of Being. Karma is not a factor here. Speed of life is not
speed of Time. Its speed is greater than light. (MSS, slightly modified)
[Out of the Spirit Being came Consciousness and Force.
Force is lower, Consciousness is higher. In Force we are limited to ego,
pain, duality, time, finite. In Consciousness there can be end of ego,
universality, unity, instantaneous time, and the infinite. By going
within to the inner mind and beyond to the personal evolving soul we can
enable Consciousness and all its attributes. We back closer to Being,
the source of all. This movement is the key to the evolution of Man.]
Formula of
Discovering the Spirit Within Concentrate your focus
away from the surface of life and move to the depths within. A new inner
poise, as well as a calm and peace will gradually get established. Once
it is established, consistently consecrate act, events, and situation by
opening to the Force, which will enable abundant life response around
you, leading to accelerated results, achievement, and success.
This will amaze you, and greatly energize you. It will also have the
effect of opening the pathways to the deepest parts, the Inner Being,
the True Self, the evolving soul. Then if you are lucky, you will
actually move through this wider opening within and really experience
the Inner Being, the personal evolving soul on a more continuous basis,
which is, in essence, the first great opening and stage for an
individual on the road to one's ultimate evolutionary possibility.
Discovering the
Spirit Within
In this
interview Roy Posner, President of Growth Online, discusses how we can find
the spirit within us to enable infinite delight as well as infinite
accomplishment and success in life.

The Psychic Being
as Opening to Spiritual Supramental Transformation
Supermind is come upon through the psychic opening, which then enables
the spiritual and then the supramental transformation. Consecrated
living enables the psychic opening in the first place.
Other Points
Shifting to Within
Enables Life to Suddenly Respond Positively in Kind
All around you are tensions, and the wrong movements of life. You catch
yourself and realize that you have been living these last moments in
your ego sense of separateness, which is synchronous to these outcomes.
You shift to the depths within, open to others' suggestions, and notice
that everything begins to work out around you, as if in a perfect
symphony of harmony and right result. It is a wonder to behold. An equal
wonder is that we do not choose to live this way all of the time.
Untitled
Bringing
out the timeless in time brings out its spirit. Evoking the infinite
from the infinite does the same. Going into the depths and gathering the
Force above are the decisive instruments for these movements, which
express for us through spiritual skills; i.e. personal values in life
Process of Attaining
Higher Life
For those committed
to the Higher Life the process of its attainment is aspiration (for the
Greater), rejection (of the lower), and surrender (to the Divine Will).
Transforming a Defect into Its Opposite
A defect hurts. When recognized and removed, it may become rectified.
When consecrated and surrendered, it is transformed into infinite
heights, as when cruelty turns into generosity. (Paraphrase MSS)
Learn from a Discussion
Our goal should not be to win a debate, bit to learn from the
discussion. Inner Silence, silent Will, and taking the other person's
point of view are spiritual techniques that will certainly go a long way
to achieving this goal.
From Organization to Material Results
Greater organization of the
person enables greater consciousness towards the gathered force, hence
its greater concentration moving towards material results. I.e. higher
organization is higher consciousness is higher concentration of force is
greater likelihood of material result.
Opening to the
Superconscient Transforms the Subconscient
As we rise in consciousness through our inner experiences and connect
with the superconscient forces and powers, we bring in those powers and
forces through our subliminal being that overcome the limiting
influences of the subconscient on us. Since the subliminal sits on the
surface of the subconscient, by opening to the superconscient it can
help the subconscient evolve. When the subconscient evolves all of its
negative influences on us can weaken.

MOVING TO THE
DEPTHS WITHIN (CONCENTRATION)
(top)
[Note:
there are three central spiritual methods of connecting to the Spirit
are Consecration, Moving to the Depths, and Surrender.
Consecration
is to open to the Force before engaging in an activity.
Moving to the Depths
(or Concentration) is a movement away from the surface existence to a
deeper existence within. In the deepest depths one discovers the
Personal Evolving Soul.
When you reach the Evolving Soul in the depths, then you can begin a
life of Surrender to the Divine.]
What Concentration
-- Moving to the Depths -- Is
Untitled We have a deeper nature in
the depth of our being. We mostly live on the surface of life. If we
learn to live more in the depths, which is closer to our own spiritual
essence, we move away from our limitations, our limited view of life.
Overcoming Sense and Concentration
Withdrawing from the world of senses,
the external world. This is the first stage of concentration. It means
the Mind withdraws from hearing outer sounds, seeing outer sights, etc.
(MSS)
Definition of (Inner) Concentration
Mind
in meditation turning off the senses, seeing and hearing for itself is
concentration. (MSS, slightly modified)
Man's Stages of Inner
Growth (away from the outer) & Mind
Man's stages of inner growth
are:
-
[The five] Senses
dominate the mind, a pure vital status.
-
Mind sifts the
senses from facts and acts on pure facts--intellectuality.
-
Mind understands,
not the senses.
-
Mind in meditation
can turn off the senses, see, and hear for itself
- This is concentration.
-
This opens the
Mind to insight and intuition.
-
Intuition shifting
inside from outside becomes supramental intuition (MSS, slightly
modified)
Problems Created
by Living on the Surface of Life
We live on the surface of life. We are too
outer, reacting
to everything around us. From such a poise we are constantly
reacting,
rather than being rooted in calm and silence and peace. When we live on
the surface of life, our bodily ego is constantly asserting itself. When
we live on the surface of life, our bodily ego is constantly asserting
itself. That sense of I of me is out front, creating a separateness that
disengages us from the totality and wholeness of what is happening
around us. When we live too close to the surface of life we see things
through a haze of our own needs, our own wants, our own prejudices and
inclinations; not the full, moment-to-moment emerging true truths,
multi-sided truths around us.
The Miraculous Power of
the Inner Life Over the Outer Life
There is a continuum that ranges from living on the surface of life,
i.e. on the outside, to living in the deepest depths within oneself,
centered in our personal evolving soul. When one is centered on what on
outside, the surface, one is stuck in ego and separateness, limited to
the slow moments of time, to the finite possibilities, to suffering, to
Ignorance of the merging truths unfolding in life, leading to lack of
accomplishment and results. As one moves within, to the inside, there is
a movement away from ego, toward unity with the environment and others,
toward the greater possibilities and truths that are emerging, to
timelessness, and the movement of the past, present and future into the
Now, all of which enables infinite possibilities, vast understanding,
insight, and action, which enables infinite accomplishment and results.
It is the secret of how we can instantaneously and abundantly effect the
outer existence from within ourselves.
To move within,
just withdraw your consciousness your mind from the input of the outer
senses, and focus within. In that depth feel the withdrawal from the
surface, and sense an inner existence. Station yourself there. One day
you may meet your soul there, the spark of the Divine, and further
still, your personal evolving soul, from which you can instantaneously
and miraculously move life without yourself moving. It is the great
power of the within to effect the without. In fact, you perceive that
the without is actually contained in the within; that you can
move the outside abundantly, instantly, and positively by any thought or
willed action from that inner status. It is the great secret of how the
inner can move the outer, contradicting our whole view of existence that
only the outer (action) moves the outer life.
Moving to the Depths
Within (i.e. Concentration) It is one thing to comprehend inner-outer correspondence as a principle
of life; it is another to consistently live it. What can we do
then to keep it uppermost in our minds, so that when a problem arises,
we are able to first relate the outer to the inner, and then make the
necessary inner adjustment to overcome the obstacle? In other words, how
can we easily recall this approach when we are caught up in the daily
details of life?
We can begin to accomplish this by moving the focus of our consciousness
away from the surface of life, from the bubblings and churnings of the
outer existence, to a deeper poise within. Stationed in this deeper
poise inside ourselves, we are able to shift our consciousness from
preoccupation with the sense data streaming into our minds from the
outside through our five senses, to a clearer and more rational state of
mindfulness. As we move our concentration from the surface to the
depths, not only do we withdraw our consciousness from the bombardment
of surface visual and audible sense inputs to the clear rationality and
logic of thought, but we move away from our ego sense, of our sense of
separateness from others and the environment. As a result, we develop a
wider view; and we are able to embrace the multiplicity and right
relation of life unfolding around us, enabling perceptions of the true
truth of the life before us. This in turn leads us to perceptions of the
possibilities before us, which provides choices, out of which we can
make the right decisions, resulting in actions that end in perfect
success.
Let's take an example. An individual who is living in his surface
consciousness is listening to a conversation that others are having. He
picks up on one point that is particularly striking to him, which is to
make sure that he downloads the latest updates to his virus protection
software. The rest of the crowd responds loudly in agreement. This
information is very helpful. However, had he truly listened to other
aspects of the conversation; had he had the inner wherewithal to sense
the deeper meaning between the words, he would have perceived other
critical issues being addressed; issues so important that it could have
changed the course of his career. If, through meditation, inner
concentration, or other means, he had established that deeper inner
poise, he would have had the mindfulness to perceive issues critical to
his life. Thus, we see that establishing an inner mindfulness enables a
greater fluidity and connectedness between our inner consciousness and
the world outside ourselves.
Inner and Spiritual
Concentration
When someone is doing a work like writing, we find he does not notice
our coming and standing by his side for some time. He may not respond to
a few words of ours calling his attention.
Later we are surprised at his surprise when we mention how oblivious he
was of our visit. That is concentration. In yoga, concentration is
defined as Being dwelling on itself. The index of dwelling on itself is
to be oblivious or forgetful of the outside.
At the time of such a concentration, Mind cannot think of the future.
Thinking of the future is expectation. Nor can it think of the past,
which is the source of worry. We call it brooding over the past.
Withdrawing from the past and future, one concentrates on the Present.
That way, the present becomes the Ever Present.
Yogic concentration demands the yogi withdraw from the world of senses,
the external world. This is the first stage of concentration. It means
the Mind withdraws from hearing outer sounds, seeing outer sights, etc.
Having withdrawn from the outer world, the Mind is in its own inner
world. Mind can see now without opening the eyes. It can hear, smell,
touch, taste all by itself. Dhyana becomes a success at this stage. Few
householders can reach this state.
As one withdrew from the external consciousness, he must
now withdraw from the inner consciousness. The Truth of the Spirit lies
in the inner consciousness. The Truth of the one is behind the inner
consciousness where the yogi expands inwardly into the consciousness of
the Idea. (MSS, extracted)
Results of Concentration (Living in the Depths)
Living in Depths and
Knowledge
Living in the depths enables clear thinking, insight, and ultimately
reveals the final truths or the whole truth that we are seeking.
Moving Within
and Its Benefits
Only when
you have begun to break the never-ending link of our consciousness to
the surface of life can we move within. Only when we are able to move
the focus of our thoughts away from the constant input of the five
senses to rational thought, or even beyond that to
silence
in the mind, can we break the connection with the surface.
We begin this
process of bringing the spiritual Being into the Becomings of our lives
by first moving into the depths of our being, away from the
surface of life. We move from mind preoccupied with sense data to mind
centered in the silence of the depths. Then we can move further within
to the deepest depths where we discover the Inner Being, the personal
evolving soul.
We move into the
depths within, develop an inner poise, discover the silence there. Then,
if we are lucky, we go further within and find our evolving souls, and
bring in this spiritual power into our daily lives, changing ordinary
life into infinite life.
Living within you are
more in harmony and unity with the environment, with others, with the
emerging truths in the atmosphere.
Connecting within will
enable you to have a deeper sense of what is unfolding around you at any
moment in time. From that inner poise you will be far more in tune with
others, with the environment, to the moment to moment unfoldings of
life. This will enable you to have better ongoing understanding and
knowledge, which will enable you to develop keener
insights into
what is happening around you. As a result, you will make better
decision; you will take actions that are based on truth, which means
they are far more likely to end in success and achievement. In
other words, you will have the inner poise that can enable vast
knowledge, accomplishment, and happiness in your daily life.
Moving to Deeper
Consciousness Enabling Multi-Sided View and Insight
By going
deeper within, into our deeper consciousness will enable can help
us move from our sense-based mind -- rooted in our feelings, emotions,
judgments, and prejudices -- to the higher part of mind proper, where we
see things objectively and rationally; where we engage in pure
rational thought, rather than
emotional thought. From that
inner poise and status we can see the abundant myriad of facts around
us, which in their multiplicity and variety lend themselves to insights.
And from insights we can have integral insights and illuminations
and intuitions that lead to ever greater conclusions, until we reach
what we call the "integral knowledge and understanding" that Holmes
seemed to have had at the end of every case.
From Ignorance to Integral Knowledge through the Path of the Within
-Living on the surface causes us to be exclusive and
hence more Ignorant, while living in the depths enables inclusiveness,
hence more integral is our Knowledge.
-Sri Aurobindo's path for overcoming our fundamental
Ignorance born of the exclusive nature of Mind, begins with a movement
within, away from the surface, which enables a corresponding opening to
the higher planes of spiritual mind from which we develop the inclusive,
many-sided, integral full Knowledge.
Results
of Living in the Depths
By living in
the depths, within, rather than on the surface of life you will be --
calmer, more observant of your limiting capacities, more observant of
life around you, less inclined to act from one's ego sense and sense of
separateness, more likely to find more harmony with the environment,
enable more perfection and possibilities to occur in life.
When we are centered,
stationed within, we are open to greater forces beyond ourselves,
universal forces that enable us to have a greater perspective,
understanding, awareness, and effectivity in the world.
Benefits of Inner
Poise
When you are poised inside, you are less likely to make hasty, wrong
assumptions about the object of inquiry or concern; of circumstances on
the outside.
Benefits of Living
in Depths
Living in the depths sustains optimism, cheerfulness, patience, and
general positive attitude, which are the foundation of a life of
evolutionary development.
More Benefits of
Living Within
When you live within you tend to be less reactive, impulsive; less
likely to needlessly jump off course, yet more open to change when it is
objectively necessary.
Experiencing
Oneness in the Depths
RP: When we go
within we begin to overcome our divided nature that perceives dualities
of pleasure and pain. Instead, we see the oneness of life; all things in
their essential unity. That includes the unity of the inner and outer,
and of spirit and matter. We see all things that appeared as
contradictions on the surface as complementary in the depths.
Question: How can we then move to this depth to see life this
way?
RP: Imagine you are going for a walk. At first, you perceive a
busy life that is beautiful to the sight. You also hear a variety of
sounds. Now you withdraw your attention from the things that catch your
eye; as well as the sounds. You blur your eyes so you are nor
preoccupied by the visual sense. You withdraw to a secret place inside,
and the outside becomes a misty dream.
You march on silently with a heart and mind empty and still. You then
briefly perceive several thoughts inside, which you let go of, and then
slowly fade and disappear. Now you are walking briskly, yet silently;
still and free, and empty within.
You walk this way for several minutes. Up ahead you notice a commotion.
You see people who appear to be in conflict, yet you sense that they are
working things out underneath, despite the outer division. As you walk
on you turn around and see them shaking hands. You sense that they now
have much to think about and improve on.
You are silent in thought, yet mindful and aware. When you examine your
inner conditions, you perceive no division anywhere within. All is clear
and smooth.
Inside there is a solidity of stillness. There are no emotions. No
desire. There is only flow, and calm.
Still concentrated within, you feel the first stirring of spirit. Then
you gaze outside, and you sense that the world itself is a vessel of it
as well. As is each person. You are no more important than they are.
That they are an extension of you, and you of them.
As you walk on, you feel non-separation between you and life; a single
continuous existence that flows from within outward, and from outward to
within. All separation and division between you and life has
disappeared. It is peaceful non-dual existence that extends forever, and
returns to a vast stillness inside.
Now you feel your being extending outward to ends of the universe. You
are in silent communion with the All and everything.
You sense that all division, conflicts of life are only surface
occurrences; mental views of things. That underneath all is deep harmony
and oneness.
You look out onto life and perceive stillness and peace everywhere. All
is but a golden light.
Benefits of Living Within and Opening to the Force
If only we
learned to live within and harness the spirit above, we would accomplish
at ten times the level we are now accomplishing at. Rooted in the depths
of our being, and open to the Force "above," descents of intuition begin
to pour into your mind, enabling you to overcome the bonds of logic,
space, and time. Living such a life brings enormous change. E.g. an
investigator on a case would uncover the motive and culprit in the bat
of an eye. The athlete would discover a new aspect of his being that
would enable to excel far beyond what he has ever experienced. An
instructor would have the adoration of his students where previously he
only had their respect. A politician would attract the right people and
take the right action that would enable the administration to be known
for their visionary leadership and great benefit to society. A CEO would
increase the company's profit by ten times in two years. A newspaper
columnist would turn solid insightful comments into revelations that
would electrify the nation. A manager would issue a report to
superiors that would become the basis for stunning turn-around for a
lifeless company.
In the end what
occurs when living within and opened to the Force is that for you future
possibilities are realized in the present; infinities of possibilities
break out where only the finite seemed to reside; life responds
positively from seemingly out of nowhere; knowledge that would have
taken weeks or months to acquire simply appears in the mind. In other
words, our perceptions of cause and effect, the inner and the outer,
time and space, of the finite and the infinite, are rendered obsolete.
Benefits of Living
Within
-When you
move within to the depths the perceptions of division, duality,
contradiction begin to be replaced by interrelatedness, unity, and
oneness.
-At its greatest depths one perceive the spirit emerging in every aspect
of life, which is the birth of Brahman consciousness in the individual.
-The deeper one lives, the greater the possibility of understanding and
Understanding the unfolding around one's self.
-To the degree one lives within, one's own limited sensibilities are
overcome.
-When you move within to spirit you move from reliance of one's own
capacities and skill to a Higher Consciousness and Capacity.
-Living within is concentration. Opening to the Force "without" is
consecration. Concentration enables better (i.e. deeper, more frequent)
concentration. Results and benefits of greater consecration can energize
one to live even more within and its ever-accelerating benefits,
including the potential to burst through to one's personal evolving
soul.
-When you are centered within your interests tend to move towards others
and away from self. Accomplishment at any or all levels (money, success,
happiness, productivity, profits, new opportunities, etc.) will
certainly follow. It may even take the form of life response in another
related area of life, challenging our normal perceptions of cause and
effect, space and time.
-When we center ourselves within in our daily activities we reduce the
tendency to drink, take drugs, smoke, overeat, to be tense, to seek
intensity, etc. What could be more immediately practical?
Effect of Withdrawing from Sense
Perceptions of Outer Objects
It might seem harsh to withdraw the mind from the splendorous scenes
before it, such as the ever blue skies, the mighty mountains in the
distance, the beholding of some delicate beauty, and the attraction of
all other alluring things, including the incessant attention to the
objects of life that are displayed before us in a never ending
procession. Yet it is precisely this withdrawal that enables the truer
INNER pleasures to well up within us, and take hold of our lives,
rendering these other pleasures small, even frivolous; and yet
ironically enabling us to perceive these objects in their right
relations, it their truer sense and purpose in existence, in their
wonder as forms of Spirit.
Stepping
Back within for More Conscious Living
Most of you live on the surface of your
being, exposed to the touch of external influences. You live almost
projected, as it were, outside your own body, and when you meet some
unpleasant being similarly projected you get upset. The whole trouble
arises out of your not being accustomed to stepping back. You must
always step back into yourself - learn to go deep within -step back and
you will be safe. Do not lend yourself to the superficial forces which
move in the outside world. Even if you are in a hurry to do something,
step back for a while and you will discover to your surprise how much
sooner and with what greater success your work can be done. If someone
is angry with you, do not be caught in his vibrations but simply step
back and his anger, finding no support or response, will vanish. Always
keep your peace, resist all temptation to lose it. Never decide anything
without stepping back, never speak a word without stepping back, never
throw yourself into action without stepping back. All that belongs to
the ordinary world is impermanent and fugitive, so there is nothing in
it worth getting upset about. What is lasting, eternal, immortal and
infinite -that indeed is worth having, worth conquering, worth
possessing. It is Divine light, Divine love, Divine life- it is also
Supreme Peace, Perfect Joy and All-Mastery upon earth with the Complete
Manifestation as the crowning. When you get the sense of the relativity
of things, then whatever happens you can step back and look; you can
remain quiet and call on the Divine Force and wait for an answer. Then
you will know exactly what to do. Remember, therefore, that you cannot
receive the answer before you are very peaceful. Practise that inner
peace, make at least a small beginning and go
on in your practice until it becomes a habit with you.
(The Mother)
The Universe
Contained Within that We Can Move
-When we go within we
come to see that the outer life is really contained within our inner
life and existence. That from this inner poise we gain control of the
outer life from within ourselves. That the inner can control the outer,
whereas when we are only living on the surface, in the outer, we have no
real control of the outer.
-The inner containing
the outer is an experience and realization that we find to be literally
true as we move further along on the spiritual path. We learn that we
are not only individual beings, but we are also universal beings. We can
not only can discover our own evolving soul, our individual True Self,
but we can come in contact with our Universal Self.
If the discovery of our True Individual Self gives us mastery over life
-- enables us to become masters over our own individual lives -- then
discovering the True Universal Self enables us to become masters of the
universe.
We can not only have higher perceptions of our immediate environment by
knowing our own true self, and then use the Force to optimize and bring
in the infinite possibilities into our lives, but we can have higher
perceptions of all things around us, extending to the collective, to
society, to the universe, and then use the Force to bring about positive
outcomes for others, for the collective, for society, the world, and the
universe.
Moving the Outer from
Within
As we
move along the path of personal growth, we begin to see that the deeper
we go into our inner consciousness -- even to the depths where we
discover our personal soul being -- the more we begin to perceive the
power that enables us to move the outer world from within ourselves.
Affecting Life from Within
(Life Response)
Affecting life from within is life response. It is based on the
principle that the inner can move to the outer.
Changing the World from
Within An individual can change
the course of history from within. You can also accomplish the same
thing by overcoming a corresponding limited quality in one's self.
Stopping Time from Within
When we move within, we live less in the normal frame of time.
Instead we begin to stop time, and as a result
have at our disposal a greater
awareness in those micromoments in between.
Going Within and Perceiving the Oneness of Life
When we go within, we see the
oneness of life. We see all things in their essential unity. As a
result, we overcome our divided nature of pleasure and pain; seeing the
unity of the inner and outer, and of spirit and matter. We are able to
look at all contradictions in life and see the complementariness and
unity behind.
Developing our Power of Creation from the Depths
The process of creation for the individual is the same process by which
the Divine manifest the known universe. The more we perceive this, the
greater the power we can harness its power, and thereby enabling life to
suddenly and abundantly respond. When we move to the depths, culminating
in the evolving soul, we develop the greatest capacity to perceive the
similarities between the process of Divine Creation and the process of
individual creation. We can then develop the ultimate knowledge and
wherewithal to become Masters of Life.
Concentration
Enabling Consecration and Surrender
Though one can consecrate an event before one has learned to
concentrate, a decided attempt at an ongoing all-inclusive concentration
will enable the greatest capacities of consecration to blossom, and open
up the further possibility of one's Surrender to Spirit in life.
Concentration &
Running Thoughts
Concentration means dwelling on itself. What disturbs concentration is
lack of mental discipline which is unable to control running thoughts.
(MSS)
Recognition of Subliminal
When you move within you are more likely to recognize the positive
thoughts and forms of subtle guidance rising from the subliminal.
Living
in Depths Enables Experiences of Spiritual Mind
The deeper we live within the more we enable such descents from the
various levels of spiritual mind. Also, as we use conceptual mind to
analyze gathered thoughts, we gain a greater understanding. If there is
a multi-sided perception of those facts, then insight comes about. If we
are centered within, then those insights will attract even greater
insights as the illuminations, intuitions, and revelations of spiritual
mind.

All-Inclusive Concentration
All-Inclusive Concentration
There are various methods to begin the practice of
yoga -- i.e. conscious evolution. We can consecrate acts, surrender to
the Divine, etc. We can also move our concentration inward.
If we focus all of our being inward to a single point, it is all
inclusive. How is this done? E.g. in our minds we can to concentrate
exclusively on a single aspiration we have in life so that it might be
accomplished. It then gathers a power and tends to manifest. (If we also
consecrate it to the Mother, it has added causal power). We can also
focus on a point behind the heart, and other locales.
There is a more ultimate purpose of all inclusive concentration. It is a
method that will enable our full surrender and self-consecration to the
Divine. As Sri Aurobindo puts it in The Synthesis of Yoga:
"The effective fullness of our concentration on the one thing needful to
the exclusion of all else will be the measure of our self- consecration
to the One who is alone desirable."
All-Inclusive Concentration
All-inclusive concentration is
to focus on a single point. It can be used to achieve a purpose, such
focusing our aspiration so that it may be quickly achieved through that
gathering of energy within. It can also be used to focus ourselves on
the Divine exclusively.
All-inclusive
concentration is somewhat different than concentration, i.e. the going
within away from the surface of things.

Methods
of Connecting to the Spirit There are three central spiritual methods of connecting to
the Spirit are Consecration, Moving to the Depths, and Surrender. Consecration
is to open to the Force before engaging in an activity.
Moving to the Depths
(or Concentration) is a movement away from the surface existence to a
deeper life within. In the deepest depths one discovers the Personal Evolving Soul.
Surrender is to offer all one's
work, one's life, one's very being to the Divine Intent and Power. (It occurs generally
after one has connected with the Personal Evolving Soul.)
From Consecration to
Concentration to Surrender -The recommended
process of spiritual growth is to begin by consecrating
aspects of one's daily life to the spiritual Force. After a
while, it will enable one to forge a deeper consciousness
within (concentration). At some point one may come in
contact with the deepest depths, the evolving soul from
which one can begin to surrender all parts of one's being to
the Divine. Thus, the process is Consecration >
Concentration > Surrender.
-Most individuals can practice
consecration. I.e. offering all activities and events to the
spiritual Force to enable instantaneous miraculousness (i.e.
sudden good fortune; aka "Life Response). Beyond that is to
embark on a life of conscious evolution ("Yoga" in Indian
parlance), which is generally for a chosen few though anyone
can partake in it.
Consecration,
Concentration, Surrender
Consecration is to offer aspects of one's
daily life to the Force to enable perfect outcomes and instances of
sudden good fortune. Concentration is to move within, away from the
surface of life. Surrender is to offer one's life entirely to the Divine
for Its Purpose and Intent.
Consecration, Concentration, Surrender
Through consecration we change life
through the power the Force that we open to. From a deeper poise of
concentration, we can more readily function in the world, perceiving the
flow of life more acutely. From there we can more readily and powerfully
consecrate. The spiritual aspirant will begin living their lives from
this poise. Surrender is to offer our very being to the Divine. It is to
give our lives for its Purpose. It is one of the great points of
conscious evolution towards the Spirit (i.e. Yoga).
Consecration
that is Enhance through Concentration
We can enhance our ability to consecrate, i.e. self-offer activities to
the spiritual Force by moving our orientation inward. That inner
orientation in the depths of our being is concentration. Concentration
makes consecration more frequent and perfect.
Consecration, Concentration, Surrender
The average man, the householder, the worker can certainly take to
consecration, which will bring the conditions of life under control,
evoke good fortune. The individual seeking to join the path of conscious
evolution -- aka 'yoga" in the east -- can shift his orientation
inward so that he is more in touch with the flow of life, and senses
what to do from within. That orientation of his existence from within
also gives him the concentration to consecrate more often; to offer all
events, circumstances, issues, concerns, and problems to the spiritual
Force for their instantaneous improvement. Surrender is to devote one's
entire existence to the Infinite consciousness; to reorient one's self
around the Divine Intent and Will. In that ultimate state of spiritual
aspiration, an inner orientation (concentration) and the consecration of
all acts and circumstances will be his standard method of operations.
Consecration
Moves One to Depths
Consecration Moves One from the Surface to the Depth (MSS)
Consecration or Concentration as the Starting Point
We can start from consecration, which will move us to the depths
(concentration) -- this is particularly the method if we are novice to
the spirit -- or we can be well on our way in consecration, and
therefore consciously move to the depths so that our consecration is
more forceful and frequent.
Stages of the Yoga
Before we get to surrender, constant
consecration needs to take place for those who are dedicated to the
spiritual life. Eventually a path is forged inward to the inner being.
If we are true pioneers of consciousness, then we discover the psychic
being deeper still, i.e. the evolving soul in the deepest depths. When
we have made that awesome connection, we more naturally take to
surrendering our entire being, our very lives to the Divine. Mother did
it. Few others have. It takes a stupendous inner sincerity and
aspiration to live this self-surrendered Divine existence.
I see at least seven stages
in the yoga (conscious evolution): constant
consecration, forging deeper within,
inner silence, descents of intuition of
knowledge and light, reaching the evolving
soul that is now the Inner Guide, the descent of supramental force into
all planes of the being, complete surrender to the Divine, and becoming
a Gnostic being (a supramental being of the next species).
Consecration Enables Deeper Concentration
Interestingly, though concentration can be the focus and foundation
and of our consecration efforts, the more we consecrate, the more we
penetrate to the depths. That in turn creates an opening to the psychic
being (the personal evolving soul) in the deepest depths, allowing for
Self-Surrender.
Consecration vs. Surrender
Opening to the spiritual Force is
consecration. Surrendering to the Force is consecrating our very lives
to the Divine. The former enable personal progress, super-normal
experience, and the cooperation of life (instantaneous miraculousness;
life response). The latter also brings spiritual evolution and
transformation to the individual, as well as an opening for a Divine
life on earth.
Relationship between Methods of
Concentration, Consecration, Psychic, Surrender
The greater the concentration, including an all-inclusive
concentration, the more likely we will consecrate. the more we
consecrate, the more we forge an opening into the depths enabling more
and greater concentration. Both enable movement towards the psychic
being, the personal evolving soul. When we touch it, we more readily
surrender our being, our lives to the Divine Purpose and Intent.
From Concentration to
Consecration to Surrender
[For the spiritual aspirant Sri Aurobindo has identified these three
stages of conscious evolution.]
Concentration -- "Concentration
is indeed the first condition
... A separate strong fixing of the thought, of the emotions or
of the will on a single idea, object, state,
inner movement or principle is no doubt a
frequent need here also; but this is only a
subsidiary helpful process."
Consecration -- "A
wide massive opening, a harmonised
concentration of the whole being in all its parts and through all its
powers upon the One who is the All
is the larger action of this Yoga without which it cannot achieve
its purpose.
It is, then, in the highest mind
of thought and light and will or it is in the inner heart of deepest
feeling and emotion that we must first centre our consciousness, --in
either of them or, if we are capable, in both together, --and use that
as our leverage to lift the nature wholly towards the Divine.... the
absolute consecration of the individual to the Divine.
... This concentration of the
whole being on the Divine that it seeks and, as its corollary, this
constant rejection, throwing out, catharsis, of all that is not the true
Truth of the Divine. An entire consecration of all that we are, think,
feel and do will be the result of this persistence. This consecration in
its turn must culminate [later on] in an integral self-giving to the
Highest; for its crown and sign of completion is the whole nature's
all-comprehending absolute surrender."
Surrender -- "[In the next
stage] there will supervene an increasing purified and vigilant
passivity, a more and more luminous divine response to the Divine Force,
but not to any other; and there will be as a result the growing inrush
of a great and conscious miraculous working from above. In the last
period there is no effort at all, no set method, no fixed sadhana; the
place of endeavour and tapasya will be taken by a natural, simple,
powerful and happy disclosing of the flower of the Divine out of the bud
of a purified and perfected terrestrial nature. These are the natural
successions of the action of the Yoga."
"These movements [concentration,
consecration, surrender] are indeed not always or absolutely arranged in
a strict succession to each other. The second stage begins in part
before the first is completed; the first continues in part until the
second is perfected; the last divine working can manifest from time to
time as a promise before it is finally settled and normal to the
nature."
"This predominance of a greater diviner leading, not personal to
ourselves, indicates the nature's increasing ripeness for a total
spiritual transformation. It is the unmistakable sign that the
self-consecration has not only been accepted in principle but is
fulfilled in act and power. The Supreme has laid his luminous hand upon
a chosen human vessel of his miraculous Light and Power and Ananda."
(Sri Aurobindo, from The Synthesis of Yoga, chapter "Self
Consecration")
The
Process of Realizing the Guru's Realization and Beyond
A guru is the pioneer who provides a greater comprehension.
We now can have experiences that verify that knowledge,
giving us that same knowledge, possibly even greater than
the guru in that specific domain. Parallel to this
acquisition of the knowledge of life, we are opening to the
higher Power ever increasingly. It occurs through
consecration, but a consecration that is ever-increasingly
one pointed (i.e. all inclusive). As a result, our
concentration deepens and the personality moves away from
the surface and down centered in the depths, culminating in
the Psychic Being, which is the springboard of Surrender.
That in turn is the basis for further spiritual
transformation. Or in R's scheme, a higher seeking and
embracing of and being enraptured and enfolded in Mother.
Here is an example that may illustrate. Karmayogi
developed principles about Life Response ~2001 that were
pioneering. I took up his challenge and began to write a
book on the subject (2003). To do that I asked others to
send me their 100-200 experiences of LR which were helpful.
However, until I experienced these different aspects
personally, it didn't have the power of true understanding.
I was however able to have many of these experiences,
documented the various human behaviors that precipitated it
(~50), gaining a great knowledge in that particular, narrow
domain. In some ways, I surpassed the guru's knowledge (i.e.
of the specific behaviors, not the deepest insights).
Along the way, I increasingly consecrated (opened to
Mother), and documented the variety of ways to do so that
elicited (causal) response of their own. My consecration
efforts are still limited in that it is not yet close to
being all consuming and all-inclusive. When it does, the
pathway to the Inner Being will be forged, including the
possibility of reaching the Psychic. Then True Surrender
begins, which parallel's R's scheme of connecting to Mother
at levels 4-7).
It would entail a sincere, dedicated
commitment to a life of Yoga that has further stages of
spiritual (mostly light and higher knowledge, intuitive,
supramental experience), and supramental transformation of
all planes of the being.
Of course, our choice,
Human choice, -- which in this case can be thought of as
Spiritual Aspiration -- would determine the level one wishes
to rise to in this process.

General Thoughts
Process of Attaining
Higher Life
For those committed
to the Higher Life the process of its attainment is aspiration (for the
Greater), rejection (of the lower), and surrender (to the Divine Will).
Aspiration -
Rejection - Surrender
When the soul moves, it is aspiration. When the inner being, the
inner consciousness is active, the movement is called aspiration. When
that aspiration is released, yoga begins. Once the aspiration is
released and is coupled with rejection of the human parts and the
movement of surrender -- which means the
mental will withdrawing itself from the field and allowing the Spirit to
move -- the Divine consummation is given to the individual. These are
the three steps: Aspiration - Rejection - Surrender. (MSS)
Surrender
By which the
being, consciousness, delight and power of the human being
is given up unto that of the Divine Being
is surrender. (Paraphrase of MSS)
Surrender
Once you have turned to the Divine, saying, 'I
want to be yours,' and the Divine has said, 'Yes,' the whole world
cannot keep you from it. When the central being has made its surrender.,
the chief difficulty has disappeared. The outer being is like a crust.
In ordinary people the crust is so hard and thick that they are not
conscious of the Divine within them. If once, even for a moment only,
the inner being has said, 'I am here and I am yours,' then it is as
though a bridge has been built and little by little the crust becomes
thinner and thinner until the two parts are wholly joined and the inner
and the outer become one. (The Mother)
Surrender to the Divine and Peace
Give yourself, all what you are and what you do, to the
Divine, and you will have peace.
(The Mother)
Soul, God's Giving
To the soul that wholly gives itself to him,
God also gives himself altogether. (Sri
Aurobindo)
Surrender
in Works
Instead of
us doing the work and relying on our own talents, if we allow the Divine
to bring out our talents in that work, the end result is seen in the
beginning itself. This is surrender. [MSS, slightly modified.]
Aspiring to Achieve the Divine
Aim and Instantaneous Miraculousness
Instead of trying to achieve his
own goals, can he try to achieve the divine aim?
If he agrees will his resourcefulness
be exercised for that?
In that case, he will witness the
infinite emerging from the finite.
Instead of relying on his own
capacities will he rely on the Divine capacity?
It will reveal to him the instantaneous
miraculousness. (MSS)
Surrender
in Sri Aurobindo's Yoga
-The surrender Sri Aurobindo describes
moves the man from egoistic centralisation of rationality to
universalised individuality. This change takes place on the surface, the
mind, the ego, Time and in the finite structure of events and objects.
-Human energy
cannot sustain yoga. Only the universal energy can. For that to enter
our system, all human energy must be fully exhausted. No drop of energy
should go to preserve the existing activities. Thus, HE arrives at the
method of SURRENDER.
(MSS)
Yoga And Surrender
Yoga means union of the human with the Divine behind the
human, or the Divine within the human. To achieve this union, surrender
is the means. (MSS)
Become
God
by Surrendering to God
Not even in his wildest imagination has Man dreamt of being God. All
that man wants is to get a boon from God.
Still, the Mother says it is a worthy goal for Man on earth.
What does the Mother mean when She says that Man can become God? She
does mean it. She has told the world how to accomplish it.
To
surrender one's being, consciousness, power and delight to this Force
qualifies one to aspire for becoming God, according to the Divine
Mother. (MSS, slight modification)
The
Nature of Surrender
-By
consciously surrendering our mind to
the twelve aspects of sprit is
the attitude, movement, method which
Sri Aurobindo
calls "surrender."
-The
method
of finite going back into the infinity that
appears finite, in the dimensions of the simultaneous time,
is Surrender.
-Moving
from Time in Becoming to Simultaneous Time in
the Being of the Becoming is Surrender.
-If
we decide to seek it, the Divine Mother
offers
to act on our behalf. Hence HE wants us surrender to HER.
-The
instantaneous miraculous is a point where
She
accepts our Surrender.
Surrender Beyond Consecration
At a later stage [beyond consecration],
you will feel not only this sense of wonder, but begin to develop a
certain desire to surrender to this Power. You will begin to see
that you are making the effort at consecration not so much for your own
personal achievement and success, but to fulfill the Divine purpose and
intent. You will begin to feel that you are becoming an instrument
through which the Divine Intention and Will can flow. At that point, you
may begin to surrender you very life's purpose and existence to the
Divine. Then your own individual soul purpose and the Divine purpose
will begin to merge. Such spiritual experience and realization in the
activities of life is perhaps the greatest joy known to Man.
On Surrendering
to the Next Highest Level and Spiritual Surrender
Surrender is a natural psychological process in the evolution of man
at all levels. When man progresses, he is seeking for something.
Normally he seeks for what he doesn't have, for the next step from where
he is. Very often he either has to overcome the stage where he is in
order to move to the next one, or he has to shed what he is in order to
achieve the next stage. An ignorant man who wants knowledge must first
part with his ignorance so that knowledge can come to him. Technically
we may say that ignorance is surrendered so that knowledge may come in.
Unless the present level gives up its practices, it cannot go to the
next higher level. The present level has a certain efficiency, but if we
want to move up one level, it is necessarily an improvement over what we
are. In the context of learning, the present fabric of learning has to
be undone and redone at the next higher level.
In all the areas
of evolution at the psychological level, surrender is an implied
process. It can be seen in education, in the acquisition of culture, and
in organising oneself. Any mental skill or psychological endowment can
be attained only by giving up what one has in preference to what is much
better.
In the context of
yoga, we can also apply the concept of surrender. Yoga means union of
the human with the Divine behind the human, or the Divine within the
human. To achieve this union, surrender is the means. All that humanity
has developed so far for its own functioning at the level of being human
must be surrendered, and the original spiritual nature laid bare so that
the soul can emerge. (MSS)
On Surrendering
to the Supramental Force
The descent of the Truth Consciousness, the
Supramental Force is what is New in the world. It is a newly discovered
form of the Supreme acting in life. Sri Aurobindo revealed this power to
the world.
All of the teachers and gurus of today are not
really aware of it. And yet the descending Force is the single key to
next stage of human evolution. It is the power and bridge to the future.
That supramental
Power is also acting on its own doings its
work independent of Man. It is both the Force that created the universe
and the Power that we can open to create infinite possibilities in our
own life. In other words, the Supreme
has the
supramental Force for creating a universe of forms. We have it to create
anything we wish.
Through consecration -- i.e. self-offering of
personal acts, situations, etc. to the Force -- we gain the cooperation
of life for our personal needs. When we Surrender to that power,
however, we gain the cooperation of life for the needs of the Supreme.
Surrender is for advanced spiritual aspirants whose very purpose in
living is to serve the evolutionary intent of the Divine. It is a
self-offering of one's very existence to the Supreme through an opening
to the supramental force and Power for the evolution and transformation
of one's self and humanity.
Surrender as
Method to Transform Itself into the Divine Will
The
human will that has created the material form should be transformed into
divine will so that the material force behind will change into
supramental force. Is there a method or a process for the human will to
transform itself into the divine will?
[It is surrender.] (MSS)
Identifying with the Divine through Surrender
If man surrenders totally to the Divine,
he identifies himself with the Divine. (The
Mother)
Self-Giving to Divine and Surrender
Self-giving to the Divine is the perfect condition for Surrender. Not
even asking for anything; but supporting whatever the Divine Intends.
True Love for the Divine
The true love for the Divine is self-giving, free of demand, full of
submission and surrender. It makes no claim, imposes no condition,
strikes no bargain, indulges in no violences of jealousy or pride or
anger -- for these things are not in its composition. (The Mother)
On Surrender
-Behind this act of surrender is the conviction not of sacrifice but of
expansion into the nature of the Divine. It is surrender for gain, not
for loss. One becomes That to which he surrenders.
-Will is Force, Force issues out of consciousness. Surrender of
the will results in the will disappearing into consciousness which is
the origin of the Divine. Thus, surrender
enables man to become Divine.
(Paraphrase
of MSS)
Self-Surrender
that Makes the Path Short & Easy
The path is long, but self-surrender makes it short;
the way is difficult, but perfect trust makes it easy.

Emotional Protection through Surrender
Surrender to the Divine is the best emotional protection. (The

True Saintliness
and Wisdom
True
saintliness is to want and realise what the Divine wants for you, and
true wisdom is to unite with Him so that you can clearly know what He
wants of you and for you. (The Mother)
Surrender Does Not Need to Wait
It is never too early to make the complete surrender. Some things
may need to wait, but not that. (Sri Aurobindo)
The Lesson for the
Ripe Soul in the Bhagavad-Gita
In The Gita Krishna offers to the ripe soul [i.e. one who has developed
considerably] a psychological method [of yoga, personal evolution]. It
is a method of Jivatma [the individual soul] surrendering to Paramatma
[the Divine]. It is accomplished by renouncing desire, ego and belief in
Dharmas [philosophies]. (MSS, with embedded

Consecration, Concentration, Psychic Being, & Surrender
Surrender
The next stage [beyond concentration within, consecration to the Force,
and discovering the evolving soul deeper within] is to surrender our
very being and essence to the Divine Will and Purpose. This will
radically change the orientation of our lives; a change from a
me-centric existence to a Divine-centric existence. Our very purpose in
life, all of our actions in life would be surrendered to the spiritual
reality and its purpose.
Surrender Beyond Consecration
What
consecration begins, surrender completes and consummates.
(MSS)
Discovering the Psychic Being and
Surrender Once one has discovered
the personal evolving soul [the Psychic Being],
the method of Surrender to the divine will emerges as a possibility.
Consecration, the Psychic Being, and Surrender
The more we consecrate acts to the Force, the more we can penetrate
into the depths enabling us to connect with the psychic being. When we
connect there, we are ready to surrender to the Divine.
The Journey Within
-
We are at the
point of running thoughts in the mind, or we are those thoughts.
-
To stop the
running thoughts is to detach oneself from the tendency to move
along the identification with mind, life and matter. The running
thoughts are gross, having had their origin in the body.
-
Human CHOICE is
exercised at every moment. When the choice is clear, the will moves
away from running and the mind becomes SILENT.
-
No progress will
be there the moment we discard our cherished method of consecration
that is surrender.
-
Consecration of
the thought is followed by that of vital movements and physical
urges.
-
Moving along
those lines, we reach our first landmark of the Mental Psychic.
-
As the inward
movement to the inner mind and subliminal mind continues, the
spiritual mind ranges open, and the psychic [i.e.
the personal evolving soul], which is on its downward journey
to the body, rises in its upward journey to Supermind. (MSS,
extracts)
Surrender, Acts, and
Planes of Being
Giving of One's
Self to the Divine at Various Levels
The Mother [Mira Richard] was in Japan during the
First World War. She recorded her Prayers and Meditations everyday,
which was later published. As a preface to that publication, She wrote
that there are those who give their souls to God, and others who
give their work. Some give their
wealth. A few others give
their lives to the Divine. There are the rare few who give their
souls, wealth, work and lives to the Divine... (MSS, slightly altered)
On Surrender Surrender seems less to do
with acts, events, problems, but a general or overall movement of giving
ones self to the Divine's Will, not personal will. The personal self
begins to be left behind; though it enables the real Self.
No surrender is possible
without the psychic emerging. Surrender is done through the psychic. (We
consecrate so that we reach the psychic.)
Mental, Vital, and Physical Surrender
Sri Aurobindo advocates
surrender. One surrenders one's speech which is vital.
Surrendering one's thought is mental. Surrendering one's acts is
physical, as it is the body that works. Surrender means one gives up his
own initiative and waits upon the Divine to initiate. That act of
surrender starts with the thought in the Mind, feelings in the vital and
ends with the sensation of the body. Surrender
of one's acts brings the Force through it to his body.
Surrender brings the Force to the body and
the body thrills at its touch.
(MSS, extracted)
The Act as Occasion to Surrender in Sri Aurobindo's
Yoga
Sri Aurobindo chose a method that is not of any one part. He
chose the ACT as the occasion and the method as surrender. He called it
self-surrender and self-consecration. That way it is voluntary
self-giving of one's self to the Divine. He says perfect self-giving is
perfect self-surrender. (MSS)
Surrendering All Habits
What does the human will actually surrender? In order to be a
good and conscientious citizen, we must give up bad habits in favour of
good habits. But for one who wants to unite with his soul, all habits
have to be given up. (MSS)
Surrender & Initiative
Surrender means one gives up his own initiative and waits
upon the Divine to initiate.

Infinite Results through Surrender
If we realize the Absolute
we can create anything infinitely. This is a practical concept of
infinity. Surrender to the Absolute enables this practical concept of
infinity; i.e. from that relation we can create anything. (Paraphrase of
MSS)
Response from Surrender
Surrender
of one's self to the Divine enables the spirit Being to enter the life
Becoming, which enables the infinite potentials of life to rush into the
present as miraculous sudden, abundant, responses from life.
What Practice of Surrender Can Bring
Practise of Surrender can bring prosperity at the social level, and
luck at the psychological level. At the spiritual level, the same energy
helps the spirit to evolve. (MSS)

How to Become God
Not even in his wildest imagination has Man dreamt of being God. All
that man wants is to get a boon from God.
Still, the Mother says it is a worthy goal for Man on earth.
What does the Mother mean when She says that Man can become God? She
does mean it. She has told the world how to accomplish it.
To
surrender one's being, consciousness, power and delight to this Force
qualifies one to aspire for becoming God, according to the Divine
Mother. (MSS, slight modification)
Passing on the Force
to Others
Such people who are the beneficiaries of this Force have another
opportunity. They can become a source of this Force to all others who
come into contact with them.
If they desire it, as they have remained passive when luck carried them
along, they must remain PASSIVE in their inner existence all the time,
so that the FORCE may constantly enter their life and being and
distribute itself to all those who come into contact with them. In yogic
parlance, it is called surrender. (MSS)
The Wisdom of the
Bhagavad-Gita
The Gita declares we should not be attached to the fruits of our work.
It talks about desire. Desire is to be given up. Further, the Gita
pleads for the shedding of the ego. Finally, the Gita exhorts us to
surrender all our dharmas and come to Him [the divine]. These are all
the several stages of perfection according to the Gita. The Lord takes
upon Himself the duty of leading soul to liberation when he treads this
path. This is a profound spiritual truth which will lead one to
realization of the Divine. This is a path meant for the ripe individual
soul. Spirituality is not meant for the unripe soul or for those who are
not serious. (MSS, modified)
Surrender, the Gita, and Transformation
The Gita's surrender is the most powerful yogic instrument, but
it aims at moksha [liberation, apart from life],
not transformation. (MSS)

Evolutionary Being and Collective Life on Earth
Eventually
this individual can become the ultimate evolutionary personality and
being. He become a transformed gnostic individual, filled with the
Divine aspects and powers, living life for a Divine Purpose and
Unfolding in creation. He acts with a spiritual orientation and purpose,
bringing this spirit to bear in all activities in life. He is infinitely
creative, dynamic, releasing the infinite potential of life into every
moment by bringing he Being, the Spirit into the Becoming of every
moment of our existence. If a number of such
divine-like humans emerge, then there is the possibility of
the development of a community of such individuals, living
within the greater community of society. Such individuals
may come together to help form a new social and collective
order and existence, culminating in the possibility of the
emergence of a divine life on earth.
Pioneers Living in
Supramental Consciousness Enabling Divine Life on Earth
The ultimate pioneers of consciousness can go onto supramental
heights rooted in this truth consciousness. Such a way of knowing can
open the doors to a new way of living, to enable the emergence of a new
type of evolutionary individual, and a new divine collective life on
earth.
Rapid Evolution of
the Soul through Spirit in Life
The personal evolving soul of the individual takes birth in a body in
order to gather one new attribute through that host person -- e.g.
greater courage, strength, intelligence, generosity, etc.; it can even
seek the reverse. It is for this gathering experiential nourishment from
its myriad of hosts that the soul travels in its slow journey through
successive lives.
However, by
connecting to Spirit within ourselves we can overcome this seemingly
endless journey. Through Spirit we can enable rapid evolution and
change, add more than one new positive trait to one's character, thus
providing the evolutionary sustenance that the evolving soul inside our
self seeks, abridging multiple births into one fortunate and joyful
life.
Another way of
saying this is that through our connection to spirit in life we break
the slow cycles of the karma of rebirth. Those who have touched spirit
within have seen a dramatic change to their inner consciousness, a treat
for the evolving soul within. A rarer few have actually discovered
spirit through the personal evolving soul itself, further accelerating
one's own and one's own soul's evolution.
The Ideal Attitude of
the Spiritual Aspirant Toward Time
The ideal attitude of the Spiritual Aspirant towards Time is to have an
endless patience, as if he had all of eternity for his fulfillment, and
yet to develop the energy that shall realize now and with an
ever-increasing mastery and pressure of rapidity till it reaches the
miraculous instantaneousness of the supreme divine Transformation. (Sri
Aurobindo, slightly modified)
Seeing the Unity of
Brahman
We fail to see the truth and oneness of Brahman because we live on the
surface of life (not experiencing the depth), and we live in our minds
which only sees the part and not the whole. When we move deeper within
away from the surface and rise above mind to spiritual mind to
supermind, we will know Brahman in its Oneness; experiencing the moments
of our lives from this wondrous perspective.
Untitled
People are
concerned with their mortality. Because of this they do many interesting
things along the way. On the other hand, we can go within to begin the
journey on the road to our ultimate transformation, where time recedes,
eternity breaks out, and the clutch of death slowly begins to loosen.
Formula of
Discovering the Spirit Within
Concentrate your focus away from the surface of life and move to the
depths within. A new inner poise, as well as a calm and peace will
gradually get established. Once it is established, consistently
consecrate act, events, and situation by opening to the Force, which
will enable abundant life response around you, leading to accelerated
results, achievement, and success.
The Universe
Contained Within that We Can Move -When we go within we
come to see that the outer life is really contained within our inner
life and existence.
If the discovery of our True Individual Self gives us mastery over life
-- enables us to become masters over our own individual lives -- then
discovering the True Universal Self enables us to become masters of the
universe.
We can not only have higher perceptions of our immediate environment by
knowing our own true self, and then use the Force to optimize and bring
in the infinite possibilities into our lives, but we can have higher
perceptions of all things around us, extending to the collective, to
society, to the universe, and then use the Force to bring about positive
outcomes for others, for the collective, for society, the world, and the
universe.
Developing
Higher Consciousness
(To be organized)
(top)
See Thoughts on the
Nature of Consciousness
Levels of Change of Consciousness As individuals with the
higher power that is mind proper to self-conceptualize what we wish to
be, we can determine to what level we wish to change and evolve. We can
minimally change our limiting nature, such as our poor attitudes,
limiting skills and knowledge, limiting ability to organize, etc. This
is one level of change. Another is to open to the Force to enable even
greater life response. We can also connect more deeply within into our
inner being to experience life in its fullness and wideness. We can also
undertake the triple transformation to become the new evolutionary
spiritual being. In all cases, we start from where we are now, and
decide that which we want to become. That is the process of individual
accomplishment and creation.
Untitled The more conscious you
are, the more you realize your imperfections, even down to the very
smallest details.
Highest Consciousness
Perceives Highest Purpose of a Thing At the highest levels of
consciousness, culminating in Supermind, one sees a thing in its
greatest Clarity, its greatest Truth, and for of its Highest Purpose in
the universe.
Greater Subtlety, Higher
Consciousness in Higher Planes; Higher Consciousness in Depths of Plane As we rise among the
planes (physical, vital, mental and beyond, including their sub and sub
sub planes) there is greater subtlety of substance, as well as greater
consciousness. Also the consciousness of each plane is greater in the
depths than on the surface. E.g. Mind has greater subtlety of substance
and greater consciousness than the vital and even more than the physical
below it. And the consciousness in the depths of the Mind (i.e. the
Inner Mind in the Subliminal) is greater than that of the surface normal
Mind.
Higher Plane,
Consciousness, Depths Reveals Greater Truth of Situation
Since at higher
planes there is higher consciousness we are able at the higher plane see
more of the situation in a truer light. E.g. at one plane we may see the
tragedy of Shakespearean play, where as a higher level we see the
tragedy as a Marvel of Social or even Spiritual Becoming. Similarly, as
we move toward a higher plane, we move away from the social and ethical
considerations of a situation. E.g. at one plane we may experience
something as shame, whereas at a higher level it is brought out in its
truer, perhaps we can say, more positive light and purpose. In the
depths of that plane this is even more so.
Effects of Being
Centered Within When you are centered in a
deeper poise you are less likely to react to the world from your
ego-sense, your assertiveness, your contact and conflict with others or
the environment. You are more in tune with others, with the events that
are unfolding, rather than fighting them or conflicting with them
through your ego-based separateness.
Move from Sense-Bound
to Rational Mind We need to move our center
of consciousness from what we call the sense-based mind to a higher
status of mind, where we are using the more logical, rational part of
mind. From that higher rational, conceptual status of mind we are more
objective, more likely to see the varied sides of a truth, which enable
us to get at most of the facts that lead to insight.
Untitled We need to move mind from
sense mind to objective intellectuality. (Paraphrase of MSS)
Untitled The need to think is a
transitional phenomenon in human evolution. (Paraphrase of The Mother)
Untitled For transformation what is
needed is aspiration, and the end of ego. To those who are sincere in
this regard will receive the divine help. (Paraphrase of The
Mother)
How We Can Bring Being
into Becoming The Divine Reality is an
essence of Being. Our lives in the universe is the form of Becoming.
Spiritual life for the individual is to bring the Being into the
Becoming, the spirit into every nuance of our daily lives.
Moving From Time to
Timelessness In the inner life one
should no longer be burdened by time; e.g. the sorrow and failure of the
past should not burden (unless the essence is learned from), nor the
impatient anticipation of the future. These are indicators of living in
time, which should be abandoned for a life of the timelessness of the
ever-present. It becomes truly ever-present when we also simultaneously
experience the timelessness of the Divine presence. Living this way
releases the infinite into our finite existence.
Untitled We can compress, or merge
the future into the present by moving to higher consciousness, such as
touching the psychic, surrender, consecration and other methods. If we
rise high or deep enough, we reach a point where the compression of the
future is no longer separate from the present. The future is in the
present; enabling the Ever-Present.
Untitled A key to a higher future
life is to see the practical concept of infinity; that the infinite can
actually emerge in any finite moment in time; enabling the vast future
results to appear in the present, thereby overcoming our notions of what
is possible in space and in time.
Mind and Supermind Mind is the agent of the
supramental consciousness, Supermind. Mind is the dividing mechanism
that enables us to distinguish; and yet is also intimately linked with
our separateness, our ignorance, and ego. Therefore, Supermind can
replace mind one day, enabling us to see the oneness of existence, where
divisions are perceived as unities or emerging unities that we now we
miss in mind.
Indicators of Advancing
Consciousness As you advance in
consciousness a softness envelopes your behavior; e.g. you no longer
insist on things; on ideas, actions, etc. You also begin to be guided
from without by the spirit, rather than one's own initiative. It is a
different way of living within the same day to day reality.
On Passivity Passivity is NOT dullness.
It is a state higher than dynamic activity which includes the energy of
that dynamism. (MSS)
On
Levels of Service
There are many levels of
service. There is the servicing of one's ego, the service of the
ordinary life, the servicing of one's attempt to grow and evolve, and
the service of the Divine spirit to bring about an evolution in the life
of humanity. 95-99% of people are in the first two categories.
Ego, Self, and the
Universe
Man lives
in ego and sees the whole universe in terms of himself. His scope for
achievement is to add more duality and division to the world. However,
the man who lives within and finds his true Self, contains the whole
universe within him. He can utilize all of its knowledge, powers, and
force for the greater good, and can in turn move the world from within
himself since now all of the outer is contained in the inner.
Force Absorbed at
Different Planes
The Force is pressing down on life. That fact is easiest to perceive and
experience and embody when we rise to spiritual mind and beyond, and
increasingly less so when our consciousness is centered in our vital and
physical beings. However, when these later, less subtle planes absorb
and integrate that Power, it will be an indication of the cumulative
culmination of our evolutionary transformation.
Overcoming Limitations of Physical
Consciousness on our Ascent We open to the Force, we
go within, we remain calm and patient, we wish to change our nature,
etc. After a while our physical consciousness takes over and says
"forget about these things," and so we resume our previous ways. The
reactions of the physical consciousness come periodically to stop our
growth. Be patient and calm and it will pass.
The physical consciousness
may even make us sick or tired or prone to accident after we have made a
progress. We should open to the Divine asking it to come into our
physical consciousness and transform it. Also we can ask for protection
from it and its accomplice, the subconscious.
Spiritual Evolution and
Romance Spiritual evolution is the
spirit's quest for adventure and self-discovery. Normally man seeks that
adventure at most once in a lifetime, then settles down into a
survival-based existence. If he pursues this spirit adventure through
romance, of culminates in marriage, here the adventure stops (Romance
ends with marriage.) If one seeks further spiritual progress is should
normally come through one's career. If it is through another mate, the
relationship bust be at a higher level, otherwise one will repeat and
grow no further. (Paraphrase of MSS)
On Inner
Self-Conception
When man's self-conception becomes [inner, spiritual-based]
Self-conception, the man who is dominated changes into one who now
determines the outer as well as inner forces. It is a decisive moment in
one's life. Once he reaches there, he becomes the master of his own
destiny. (MSS)

On Becoming
Universal & Transcendent Beings
(top)
Individual,
Universal, and Transcendent Self
A realized
individual being who discovers his individual soul nature can go
on and discover his universal soul nature, fulfilling the second
purpose of our existence. The third is to discover the
transcendent
spiritual soul nature and Self, connecting us in a completed circle to
the divine source.
Untitled
We have a triple purpose; to find our individual Self, our universal
Self, and our Transcendent Self. We also come to see that these three
are really one. Our purpose in life is to discover these aspects and
purposes in our lives. By discovering our universal Self we serve the
universal purpose (in the collective, society, and the universe). By
discovering our transcendent self we serve the transcendent purpose,
i.e. The Absolute, Gods', Brahman's purpose.
"There
are three realms; the Transcendent, the Universal, and the
Individual. From any one the other two can be experienced. Thus the
transcendent Divine expresses through the creation it has manifest
in the universe and in the individual. Likewise, the individual can
experience his individual Self, his universal Self, and the
transcendent Self beyond the universal."
Individual Achieves for
Divine Goals, Universal Goals The individual achieves in
the world not just for his own goals, but for the goals of the Divine
purpose and the goals and purpose of the universe.
Transformational Life
Requires Overcoming Personal and Corresponding Universal Resistances
Accepting
life, he has to bear not only his own burden, but a great part of the
world's burden too along with it, as a continuation of his own
sufficiently heavy load. Therefore his Yoga has much more of the nature
of a battle than others; but this is not only an individual battle, it
is a collective war waged over a considerable country. He has not only
to conquer in himself the forces of egoistic falsehood and disorder, but
to conquer them as representatives of the same adverse and inexhaustible
forces in the world. Their representative character gives them a much
more obstinate capacity of resistance, an almost endless right to
recurrence. Often he finds that even after he has won persistently his
own personal battle, he has still to win it over and over again in a
seemingly interminable war, because his inner existence has already been
so much enlarged that not only it contains his own being with its
well-defined needs and experiences, but is in solidarity with the being
of others, because in himself he contains the universe.
(Sri Aurobindo, from The Synthesis of Yoga, p.75)
The Individual's Power
of Universal Action
We can
change the course of history by calling out to the Divine for the sake
of the collective. It is part of our evolutionary destiny to be not only
a true individual Self, but a true Universal Self and being.
Birth of the
Universal Being
A
universal prayer with the requisite knowledge enables one to begin to
become a universal being.
The Universe and the
Transcendent Meet in the Individual
The individual through his
transformation realizes that he is a spiritual being, an individual
Self; that he is a universal being, i.e. he extends across the universe,
is influenced by the universe, and can have the powers and energies of
the universe; and he is a transcendent being, i.e. he is an emanation of
the transcendent Omnipresent Reality, the Divine. He is then the
instrument of his individual evolution, the evolution of the universe,
and of the transcendent Divine.
Individual's Higher
Consciousness Leads Social Evolution The individual rising to a
higher consciousness enables further evolution of the society. Now
society pretty much evolves through the slow and painful workings of
Nature, a fact we are unconscious of. We don't even understand the
concept of "Nature," which is not trees and birds and sky, but
Self-conscious Life that is evolving.
Silence as Foundation of
World Peace
It is from a status of Silence that we can elicit peace and harmony
among the nations of the world.

Overcoming
a Limitation for the World
If you perceive something wrong in the world, you can overcome it by
conquering the corresponding element in one's self. In this sense we are
universal beings on the road to discovering our universal Selves.
Response to One's Spirit-Based Value Spreads to Others
The Spirit is universal in its action, which means what one man does
[rooted in spirit]
benefits all such men in his emotional
world. E.g. one individual dedicated to spirit applied that
ideal through extreme cleanliness of her surroundings. As a
result of this value, events transpired that not only benefited
her, but expanded out, multiplied to benefit many others
surrounding her. (Paraphrase of MSS)
Spirit-Based
Individual Can Invigorate/Deflate the Market; (i.e. the Individual Can
Move the Universal)
Those who invoke the Spirit enter the market and the market booms. After
some time they lose interest and the market slumps. They in their
modesty do not see that their own attitude is the cause and the market
the effect. They exclaim, "The market is in a
slump. There is nothing I can do."
It is not the single person who enters the market who can egoistically
claim the credit of the boom, but it is the Force of the Spirit for
which he was an instrument. Unless they see things in the proper
perspective, there is no solution for them. In the meantime, they can
philosophize. (MSS)

Calling (the Spirit)
(top)
Engage in a Calling to Resolve an Issue
Sometimes you will need to more than consecrate an act to invoke the
force, especially if it is a serious issue. In that case you will want
to Call to the Spirit, to the Force through an extended sitting.
Calling Higher Power to Overcome
Limitations
We can also call in the force into our being to help us overcome our
mental, vital, and physical limitations.
Invoking the Spirit
When you want to invoke the Spirit, sit down, close your eyes - it may
not be necessary - stop moving the body, don't talk, DON'T THINK. A
stillness descends on the mind.
Calling the Divine Mother to Alleviate Suffering
and Sorrows
Q: I have seen some very good and innocent people having lots of
sufferings and sorrows in their lives. And such problems tend to
continue throughout their lives. Why is it so? If this is because of
fate or bad karma from past lives, is there any spiritual remedy to
enable them to free themselves from the clutches of this kind of
everlasting and painful problems?
(MSS) A: If you are that sufferer, you can get rid of
it fully shortly. GETTING RID OF IT IS EASIER THAN UNDERSTANDING IT. In
one sense, it is easy and in another sense, it is not. A detailed
explanation of what that suffering is will help me to explain to you
what you should do. In the meantime, let me ask you to SEE that to
overcome it is possible for a period of one or two days. That will
convince you of its permanent possibility.
Still, I shall briefly answer all your doubts.
1. The Mother says one is attached to these sufferings and is clinging
to them. That is why they last. This
sounds outrageous now. When you see it disappeared for a short while, my
explanation will gain a greater clarity or reality.
2. Find the deepest point of your inner Personality and call MOTHER
nonstop. Maintain the calling as a silent background for your work. In
72 hours you will see it has gone. This is temporary.
3. For a permanent relief, an understanding is necessary.
Spirit Entering without Calling
Now that the Spiritual Force
has entered the atmosphere of the earth, it has made itself easily
accessible. With increasing receptivity of mankind, a time will come
when man will not even need to call and the Spirit will enter his life.
That time has not yet come. One can make that TIME come if he can gather
a good number of people who are fully receptive to the descent of the
Spirit.
(MSS)
The Personal, the Impersonal, and Calling the Force
Individual relations are personal. Laws are impersonal. When you are
applying for a job, if you are qualified according to their rules, you
are selected impersonally. If the CEO is personally known to you and
interested in you, you get the job personally.
Calling the [Divine] Mother intensely from the heart evokes Her response
offering us Her Force personally. He who follows all Her rules, calling
Her every time he needs, has the joy of getting Her impersonal force
coming to him personally.
(MSS, extracted)
Power of Calling the
Divine Force from the Spirit Within
If you go deep
down into your personality, then you will see it is not the depth. Going
down further, you will feel as if you are at the bottom of the ocean.
Even this is not the depth. Cross it. There will be splendour of
brilliant white light. That is the Spirit. If you call the Divine Force
from there, the will become formidable. (MSS, slightly modified)

Grace and
Protection When in Difficulty or Trouble
The grace and protection are always with you. When in any inner or
outer difficulty or trouble do not allow it to oppress you; take refuge
with the Divine Force that protects. If you do that always with faith
and sincerity, you will find something opening in you which will always
remain calm and peaceful in spite of all superficial disturbances. (Sri
Aurobindo)
Protection through
the Force and Taking Practical Precaution
The [Divine Mother's] Force will act and protect in difficult and
dangerous situations. Still one must not be foolish and avoid taking
practical precautions in such occasions. (Paraphrase of MSS)
Benefit, Results that
Come from Flowers
Our devotees know that flowers are powerful in bringing us the desired
results. Especially devotees know of two flowers, 1) protection
(Bougainvillea) and 2) harmony (Coral Vine).
Quarrelsome families become QUIET when harmony flowers are brought in.
It is well known that protection flowers kept with us bring protection
in any impossible condition. To get the full benefit of the flowers we
offer to the Mother, we must resort to securing the full knowledge of
the flowers and the full knowledge of the issue for which we seek
protection or harmony.
Rain responds to the flower
"water"

rain is the material expression of God's Grace. (MSS)

An
Introduction to the New Spiritual Perceptions of Time
We can have a variety of experiences of time, from the normal
view, which itself is highly subjective, to the spiritual view, in which
time has a radically different perspective -- even very different from
the fantastic views described in science and science fiction. The
spiritual view of time described by Sri Aurobindo has no precedence in
human history. It is where all understanding of time and beyond should
begin to understand its ultimate frontiers.
Ordinary
vs. Spiritual View of Time
The normal experience of time is one of limitation and duality. The
spiritual view of time is one of infinite oneness and potentiality.
The Limited vs. Elevated Consciousness and the Experience of Time
The limited consciousness of the average person experiences ignorance,
ego, and time. The higher consciousness of the spirit-oriented
individual experiences integral knowledge, oneness, and (a) the
ever-present and (b) timelessness in time, which produces instantaneous
miraculousness.
The
Experience of Time that is of the Divine Consciousness
The Divine consciousness is infinite, and
when we experience the ever-present and simultaneous time, we come in
touch with that Being and Power. As a result, we can access to the power
of Creation and Eternity the Infinite Consciousness.
Thoughts on the Nature
of Time
Time emerged from
timelessness; from the
timeless Infinite
Divine.
Time is thus a form of
timelessness.
Timelessness is thus
imbedded, hidden in
time; involved there.
When we evolve,
timelessness comes out
of time.
For example, through
higher consciousness we
evoke sudden good
fortune, overcoming
time.
Gradually the
timelessness embedded in
time rises to the
surface through our
evolution of
consciousness.
We can also experience
timelessness when we go
within, such as when we
meditate.
If we touch the deepest
depths, our evolving
soul and true selves
within, we experience
not only timelessness
inside, but it
consistently outside.
Space is extension. Time
is movement in
extension. Timelessness
is instant movement in
extension. Also, there
extension disappears, as
distance is overcome. It
is timelessness in
spacelessness.
Timelessness in time and
spacelessness in space
is experienced through
meditation and soul
within, and on the
outside as life
response.
The destiny of humanity
is to experience all of
these things as one
thing.
Conquering Time
Conquering Space and Time though Higher Consciousness
In the higher consciousness we move beyond
the normal bounds of Space and Time. They can eventually be conquered,
like Ignorance, ego, and limitation.
Conquering Time and Space
Moving from mental thought to mental
consciousness, one sees that Time and Space are conquerable.
(MSS)
Abridging Time to Present,
Space to a Point
Abridging Time into the present, one
abridges Space into a point. (MSS)
Overcoming Space and Time
Stationary life that needs
no shifting of places is overcoming Space, through its nearest
expression. Mind that refuses to go to the past or future is its
counterpart that overcomes Time in a similar measure. Overcoming Time in
the right sense of the word is to be ecstatic in the present. A similar
experience in Space may forget totally and blissfully the external
world. Its real indication is the dissolution of the ego or its
beginning. (MSS)
Methods of Higher Consciousness that Overcome Time
Higher Consciousness comes by elevating all parts of our nature, moving
away from the surface of things to the depths, discovering the evolving
Soul within, opening to the spiritual Force, and surrendering to the
transcendent Divine. Any such action will tend to overcome the limits of
time. It is abridge or cancelled, enabling Instantaneous Miraculousness.
Spirit Overcomes the Need for
Time to Organize Life
Time is used by
mind to organize life for one's own self, and for our relation with
others and the environment. Spirit overcomes the need for time to
organize our existence; as it creates no time, or
rather timelessness in the becomings of time.
The Present Can Affect the Past Several years ago, a group of French scientists published an experiment indicating that what they did in the present could retroactively change events that already occurred in the past. It was another indicator of the true nature of time; that the past, present and future are not three divided aspects, as mind perceives it, but are one continuum of existence. Therefore, from any point in time, any other point can be affected.
Time's
Arrow
One of
the interesting
discoveries I made in
analyzing hundreds of
cases of Life Response
-- i.e. instances of
sudden good fortune --
is that Time works quite
differently than our
normal conception. For
example, let's say that
I change my attitude
towards someone from hostility to goodwill. When I then
open my mailbox, I discover
a check for
thousands of dollars
from a customer who owed me
that sum for
years. It is simply
life responding to my
change in consciousness,
which put me in
alignment with that
individual's remittance.
It turns out that long ago I had a
similar experience, and
when I asked my spiritual
teacher Sri Karmayogi if
the check would have
been mailed days before
in the past had I not
changed my attitude here
in the present, he
replied that it would
not
have. This
indicated that the
present is indeed affecting the
past!
Our
normal view is that
there are three
divisions of Time --
past, present, and
future. But from the
spiritual position, there is
only one Time that is
undivided. If this is
so, then events today
may be affecting
circumstance in the
past, just as events in
the future are
determining the present.
For example, if someone
decides
not
to shift his attitude to
the positive in the
future, it might cause
me, who was about to
pay, to suddenly
not
pay in the present. Again, it is the
future effecting the
present, just as the
present can affect the
past. In fact, any
period can affect any
other.
Interestingly, it is
only when we rise in
consciousness beyond
Mind proper, to
intuition, and higher
still to a 'Truth
Consciousness' that we
can discern these true
movements of Time. From
these planes beyond the
ordinary functionings
and logic of mind, we
can begin to see the
arrow of time moving in
any and all directions.
If this is true, if time
has these astonishing
qualities, then the very
foundation of our belief
system must come into
question, including views of history and
science, not to mention
Reality itself.
Perhaps
the most interesting
aspect of this vastly
expanded view of
time is that we have the
power to become its
Master. Not by
travelling in a Time
Machine or using other
forms of technology as presented in
science fiction, but
through
shifts in
consciousness within.
In fact, science itself
has begun to understand
the extraordinary
ancient Indian principle
that Time depends
on the consciousness of
the observer. For
example, most of us have
noticed how fast time
seems to pass when we
have a stimulating
conversation. Similarly, science
tells us that if one
approaches the speed of
light, time will slow down
or speed up depending
on the relative position
of the observer. And yet
the ancient Indian
insight is far more
profound, as it suggests
that if we elevate our
consciousness in a
given moment or circumstance,
any and
all limitations of time
can be overcome.
If e.g. I change a
wanting attitude to the
positive, and, as a
result, attract an
opportunity of a
lifetime, then I have
drawn a future
possibility and made it
real in the
present. What would have
taken years to
accomplish has instead
occurred in an instant.
Or to put it another
way, the burden of time has been
completely eliminated.
It turns
out that this inner
power to attract
something to us
thereby cancelling time has also
been verified by recent
discoveries of science.
Its theory of Non-local
Connections indicates
that if one particle of
an atom moves, it can
affect another particle
of the
same
atom, even if it is on
the other side of the
universe. Non-local
connection not only
overcomes the normally
perceived limitations of
cause and effect, but
allows for
instantaneousness
between objects no
matter the distance. Yet
another discovery of
science -- proven by the
latest mathematical
calculations measuring
and defining the cosmos
-- is that the outcome
of any event is
dependent on the person
observing it! Thus, my
observation of an event
can affect a different
outcome for it than if
another person observes
it, indicating that
consciousness determines
reality. This is a
startling scientific
discovery that confounds
every individual who
contemplates its
meaning.
Sri
Aurobindo takes this
several steps further
and says that we can
discover an inner
dimension within our
being, a soul space,
from which we are able
to overcome every aspect
of time in the outer
world. At the point that
we touch our evolving
soul within, we move
into a realm where past,
present, and future
become one single,
undifferentiated point.
Thus, when we act from
that space, life
immediately reacts to
our intentions. Moving
to this Psychic Being
within is a step beyond
a change in
consciousness, such as a
shift in attitude.
Rather it is a movement
into the
center
of consciousness. There
we come in touch with
universal and
transcendent powers,
where gives us access to
the greatest time
controlling and
affecting power in the
outer world. From these
deepest depths, I am
able to change the
conditions of life --
past, present and future
-- in an instant.
Time's Arrow thus moves
in every and all
dimensions to the degree
we express our
consciousness. It
reaches its apex and
greatest capacity when
we discover our evolving
Soul within. From there
we become masters of the
outer life, as any
intention originating
there is instantly
fulfilled.
The Source, Reason for, and Nature of Time
Reason for
Space and Time
Space and Time are created so that the One (the Divine/the Absolute) as
subject can experience itself as object.
Reason for Space and
Time
Space and Time are created so that the One can become the Many.
Time, Variation, & Delight
Time was created to create infinite variation of forms for infinite
possibility of delight.
Space and Time
Allows for Triple Differentiation
Space and Time enables the conditions for the triune aspect of subject,
object, experience in creation. E.g. I as the subject am the knower, the
object is that which is known, and the experience is that of knowing.
(Knower, Known, Knowing) These three are enabled for the eight cosmic
determinants (e.g. for the determinant of Love there can now be Lover,
Beloved, Loving).
Perceptions of Space,
Time, Matter, etc.
- Space and time are continuum of energy and substance
- (Perceptions of) Space and time are relative to the level of the
consciousness of the viewer
- Matter and space are one; of the same energy. Matter is energy in motion,
space is that energy at rest.
- Mind sees spiritual substance as material substance through the senses, and
mental substance through pure mind.
- (Perception of) The part is only a product if mind's tendency to divide. The
being, even the physical being is one.
- There is no inner and outer when we move to the very highest consciousness.
(MSS, paraphrased)
The Nature of
Time and Consciousness for the Individual
-Time moves quickly or slowly depending on the
consciousness.
-Time depends on the consciousness and position of the
observer.
-Time
has no objective reality, but subjectively depends on the status of the
consciousness. [whereas space is objective in that sense.]
-Each state of consciousness has a different time relationship. E.g.
time in Mind Space, or Time in Physical Space. Time moves quickly or
slowly depending on the consciousness.
-The higher and deeper the consciousness, the less we are effected by
the exigencies of time. Past, present, and future merge into the now. We
can embrace the past in the present, and bring the future into the
present, by moving to our deepest consciousness within. From the depths
all three dimensions of time rush into the present
-When we live on the surface of life, we are burdened by time, as well
as finiteness, ego, division, and suffering.
The Division of Time
Time that is continuous has been divided into past, present and future.
Who has divided it? Why has it been divided? It is mind that has divided
it as mind is the only instrument that can divide. Time is so divided
because of the involution of knowledge into Ignorance. (MSS)
Planes from which We Experience Time Time is decided by the plane we are acting from.
Events occur in Time; they are not made by it. The one thing that
precipitates events is emotion. Its intensity decides the speed of the
event.
Entering into the plane of physical Time, minutes become ages.
Space and Time
According to Sri Aurobindo, all reality resides in and issues from the
Absolute [the omnipresent Reality, Brahman in the East].
By a process of Self-conception, the Absolute manifests Being/Existence
(Sat), i.e. Spirit and all that issues from it
[including Consciousness Force, the planes of existence, energy, and the
universe itself.]
The principle of time emerges when Being/Existence
extends itself subjectively to become Consciousness-Force (Chit). The principle
of space emerges when Being/existence extends itself
objectively to become an object to its own Self-Conscious experience. Space and
time are different expressions of the same reality.
Space is the self-extension of Being/Existence
in the form of constant or persistent movements that give the appearance
of stable forms in contrast to Time, which is the same self-extension of Being/Existence
in the form of changing
movements. The same Being/Existence moves in
two ways, as stable pattern of movement (space) and changing pattern of movement
(time). The stable pattern appears as the backdrop for that which is changing.
(MSS, with additions)
The Nature of Time
Spirit measuring its movement by its own extension is Time.
Time is Brahman self-extended for the deployment of the movement of self-power
carrying forms and objects.
The mobility of constant Space is Time.
Time is Spirit looking at itself in essence and principle.
Time is a subjective extension of consciousness.
Time is a creation of the mind.
(MSS)
The Nature of Space and Time
Space is Being looking at itself in status.
Time is Being looking at itself in movement.
The
Ever-Present
(topic)
The
Ever-Present
A spirit-oriented
individual does not dwell on the past, except what can be used of it in
the present. Though he may aim to change the future, he is fully
absorbed in the present. He applies his full consciousness to the needs
of the here and now, without concern about rewards for the future or
influences of the past. The individual living in the ever-present is not
engaged in needless
thinking, or
caught up in desire
-- focusing only
on the demands of
the present. Interestingly by living in the Ever-present he knows
full the effects of the past on the present,
and anticipates
the arc
of unfolding
that will take
the current matter
to the future. Past, present, and future are thus experienced in the
here and now; in the Ever-Present.
The result is that
one continually
experiences a profound sense of
well-being.
The Present
The present is the most important moment in life. (The Mother)
The Balance of
the Present
To be overly occupied with the past and future is to lose the balance of
the present.
Moving Out of Time
By not thinking of the past or future, one comes out of Time. (MSS)
Moving to
the Present
Embracing the present, not the future or past, moves one out of Time.
Overcoming Space and Time
Stationary life that needs
no shifting of places is overcoming Space, through its nearest
expression. Mind that refuses to go to the past or future is its

The Power of Now in Work Here are several thoughts on how to bring the
Power of Now to our daily work.
-Focus on the work before you, not something else
you want to do, or resorting to indolence. This the key starting
point.
-Focus completely on the present, without thought
of past or future.
-Patiently do that work, with no apprehension,
tension, and demand.
-Do the current work as carefully and perfectly
as possible. Fully absorb yourself in trying to reach that
perfection. This is another key.
-Consecrate the work to bring life's conditions
under control.
-Move to the depths and feel the silence and
timelessness, and work from that poise. Meditation or concentration
can support that effort.
-As a result of living in the depths over time,
you will have intuitions of the past influence on the present, and
intimations of where the present is going in the future. You will
thus know at each point what to do in the present.
-Maintain fully positive attitudes at each point.
-Be cheerful throughout.
-The goal is to create the greatest Efficiency in
the work -- i.e. the greatest results with the least effort in the
shortest period of time.
-In the peace and demands of the Now, we can
create ultimate perfection.
-It will be accompanied by breakouts of sudden
good fortune -- i.e. Life Response.

consciousness determines
reality. This is a
startling scientific
discovery that confounds
every individual who
contemplates its
meaning.
Sri
Aurobindo takes this
several steps further
and says that we can
discover an inner
dimension within our
being, a soul space,
from which we are able
to overcome every aspect
of time in the outer
world. At the point that
we touch our evolving
soul within, we move
into a realm where past,
present, and future
become one single,
undifferentiated point.
Thus, when we act from
that space, life
immediately reacts to
our intentions. Moving
to this Psychic Being
within is a step beyond
a change in
consciousness, such as a
shift in attitude.
Rather it is a movement
into the
center
of consciousness. There
we come in touch with
universal and
transcendent powers,
where gives us access to
the greatest time
controlling and
affecting power in the
outer world. From these
deepest depths, I am
able to change the
conditions of life --
past, present and future
-- in an instant.
Time's Arrow thus moves
in every and all
dimensions to the degree
we express our
consciousness. It
reaches its apex and
greatest capacity when
we discover our evolving
Soul within. From there
we become masters of the
outer life, as any
intention originating
there is instantly
fulfilled.

Simultaneous Time:
The Third
Dimension of Time
(topic)
The Third
Dimension of Time: Timelessness in Time
Our lives are normally bound to time. The spiritual follower can
move through meditation, concentration, et al to a state of
timelessness. It is however outside life. We want to bring the sense of
timelessness into time; i.e. into the Becomings of our lives. We do that
by moving to the evolving soul within. Thus, there is Timelessness in
Time, and Being in the Becoming. There we overcome ordinary time,
producing instantaneous miraculousness.
The Third Dimension of Time (Simultaneous
Time)
We live in time, i.e. the past holds us in its grip and the future peeps
into the mind. One who lives in the Timeless dimension lives in the ever
present.
There is a further dimension of time, first mentioned by Sri Aurobindo.
It is the Timeless functioning in Time. Let us call it the third
dimension for our purposes. He calls it Simultaneous Time. This is
Supramental Time. To put these philosophical ideas in the common man's
phrase, one needs to resort to analogies. We live a domestic life which
is in Time. The Rishi lives in the Timeless Eternity during his trance.
If the Rishi chooses to live a domestic life according to his exalted
standards of Timeless stillness, he enters the Simultaneous Time, the
Supramental Time. Life at home lived according to the pristine purity of
yogic trance raises human life to that of divine life. Then man rises to
the level of the Supramental being.
The work done by such a one will be completed in a fraction of time.
Whatever we have so far sought after will gravitate towards us, often
unsolicited. This is the semblance of the Spirit moving Matter. All
problems in life will vanish. Opportunities will rush from all sides. A
Joy which no success can give, a Peace unavailable even in death will
saturate us. (MSS)
The Nature and Qualities of the Third
Dimension of Time
The plane of time is our human world. It allows success and failure,
darkness and light, right and wrong, the dualities. IT IS BOUND BY
KARMA. It is a world of the physical, the vital, and the mental. It does
not admit of the spirit. In us, this plane dwells in our surface mind.
This is a world of Ignorance. Mind, Time and Ego rule this world of
finite objects.
Timelessness is the higher world, the world of the Spirit. It is the
cosmos. It belongs to the inner mind. This is the world of the Rishis.
This world leads to moksha or Nirvana. This is not on the surface. This
is entirely a subtle world. The subtle plane is not necessarily the
spiritual plane.
The third dimension of Time is one where Time and Timelessness meet. It
is spread all over the universe. This mind is known as the subliminal
mind. Subliminal Mind can be reached only by consecration. Reaching the
subliminal Mind, Man is in the third dimension of Time where there is no
failure, no suffering, no pain and no death. Sri Aurobindo discovered
this third dimension of Time and says that it is one characteristic of
the supramental plane. This dimension of Time carries the active play of
Grace. Prayers granted by this plane are 100% perfect whereas cures by
faith in life only give 99%relief.Karma cannot operate even in
Timelessness.
In the third dimension Sri Aurobindo saw how God had made the world and
why He made it. The eternal one chose to objectify Itself and the Object
presented itself to the Subject. The Object is our world, the subject is
the higher world. That world which includes the object and the subject
is the world of the third dimension. THIS IS A WORLD OF WHOLENESS,
CONTAINING THE MANY IN WHICH THE ONE IS. This world descending to our
world transforms our world of Ignorance into a world of knowledge. To
reach this world, Man has to emerge out of his ego and enter into the
Psychic Being. This a world of Delight, a world of Divine Life a
Supramentalised world. (MSS)
Simultaneous Time
There is even a
state beyond the Ever-Present
available to
the
spirit-oriented
individual. It is
the
experience of
"Simultaneous Time." The ancient Indian rishis of the Vedas experienced
the timelessness of the infinite Divine
away from life.
It is one way to relate to Time. Then there is the time that we
experience normally, which is a limited perception of
reality.
To bring the
ecstatic, blissful Timelessness
of eternity into the
unfoldings of Time
we
move through
is to experience
Simultaneous Time. In that state where Timelessness and Time meet, we
experience instantaneous miraculousness -- i.e.
instances of
sudden good fortune. There
duration of time is
overcome, as results
come instantly; space is abridged, as
the object at a
distance is
brought down to
a
single point
before us;
and the current
limited
finite reality is
replaced by infinite results, in terms of
quantity/abundance, quality, etc..
We
evoke
Simultaneous
Time
when we move
away from the
surface
to
the depths within,
culminating
with our discovery
of our
Personal
Evolving Soul.
It also occurs when
we surrender to the
Divine Reality in
the becomings
of our lives.
It is a state
reserved for those
willing to engage in
Conscious Evolution
-- i.e. Yoga.
Timelessness in Time
Have you ever meditated before; say for
an hour or longer? Those who have experienced this inner approach to the
spirit often claim that it felt as if 10 minutes have gone by when it
was in fact an hour. That is the difference between one's experience of
time (1 hour) and timelessness (10 minutes). Time is the unfolding of
moments in duration. Timelessness is its reverse -- the absence of time;
i.e. no time.
One time I was driving along a wide-open highway from Los Banos in
the central Valley of California towards the coastal mountains. For half
a minute, I experienced what felt like a point in the future on earth
where time no longer existed -- though space was still there. Can you
imagine such a thing? Was this a prophetic vision of life in some
distant time-less future or an experience of timelessness in the Now?
When a human goes into outer space at the speed of light and
returns a year later, for him 1 year has passed. But now when he looks
around at the earth, dozens or even hundreds of years have passed. The
people of his generation are now old or long gone. In one sense, he has
experienced timelessness relative to the people who have lived in time.
When I change an attitude or focus my intention on something or
open to the spiritual Force, something equally astonishing takes place.
Sudden good fortune rushes toward me. What would have taken place in the
future (if at all), suddenly occurs in the present. Again, the limits of
time have been overcome -- replaced with no time, i.e. timelessness. Or
to be more accurate, timelessness has occurred within the becomings of
time, releasing the infinite potentials of life.
God, the Divine exists in timelessness; Life in the universe is in
Time. His aspiration is for us to experience His Timelessness in the
details of our lives, i.e. in Time. It is the destiny of life on earth.
Perhaps that is what I had a glimpse of on the road from Los Banos
nearly a decade ago.
Whatever you
raise your consciousness -- whether by meditating, improving your
nature, opening to the Spiritual Force, or moving to the depths within
to your evolving soul, you move from the finite plane of Time to the
infinite plane of Timelessness where it has entered that Time through
the becomings of our lives. It is where time and timelessness meet, and
thus where sudden good fortune (i.e. life response) arises. It is the
plane of instantaneous miraculousness. Where the finite is replaced by the infinite.
Infinite Results of Living in Timelessness in the Time Bound Events in
Our Lives
We human beings live in Time which is bound by the laws of
consciousness. Hence our life at every turn faces a limitation based on
the limitation of our consciousness. Those who leave the ordinary social
world for a world of spiritual contemplation move into the plane of
Timelessness which is limitless on all sides. But these individuals are
ones who have given up; living
apart from ordinary life. However, there is one more dimension of Time
apart from Time and Timelessness. It the co-existence of Time and
Timelessness. To us it means living our human life by the high standard
of the those who are in communion with spirit apart from life. In other
words, invoking the spirit and its timeless quality in the very
time-bound events and details of our lives. This enables the infinite
potential of life to enter the finite, revealing an extraordinary sudden
increase in accomplishment, peace, power, strength, and joy in our daily
lives. There is instantaneous miraculousness.
Timelessness in Time
Experiencing timelessness in the
becomings of time is the ultimate experience of time afforded to Man. It
is where the infinite moves into the finite.
Instantaneous
Miraculousness of Timeless in Time
There is Time in normal
life; there is also Timelessness, which is experienced in the spiritual
life. The goals is to bring the Timelessness into the moments of time.
This occurs when we live in the depths instead of the surface of life,
culminating in the evolving soul. There we experience instantaneous
miraculousness of time overcome.
Simultaneous
Time of Sri Aurobindo
-In the plane of Time apart from Time and Timelessness Sri Aurobindo
introduced a further concept where they co-exist and called it
Simultaneous Integrality of Time-eternity and Timeless eternity.
-Sri
Aurobindo pleads not for Timelessness but simultaneous Time. (MSS,

Various Thoughts on
Simultaneous
Time
From beyond Timelessness to the integrality of Time eternity and
Timeless eternity.
The simultaneous integrality of Time is to rise from Time and
Timelessness to combine the potentialities of one and the actualities of
the other.
Let us move from evolution of the Spirit in Time to the evolution of the
spirit in Simultaneous Time. Time evolves the mutable spirit.
Timelessness evolves the immutable spirit. Simultaneous Time evolves the
whole Spirit.
To have the future knowledge now is to conquer Time. We must conquer
Timelessness too. As Time wastes Time, Timelessness wastes existence. We
need to move to the action of Time with the stability of Timelessness.
Life that is the expression of the Many is bound by Time. Life that
seeks the One in the Many can emerge out of Time, not into Timelessness,
but into simultaneous Time.
The thinking ego falling silent can move to the Purusha. This is moving
from Time to Timelessness. You can be either in Time or Timelessness.
How to go to the Psychic from Purusha? Or from Prakriti? Move from Time
to Timelessness without losing hold of Time. Thus you do not move to
Purusha, but to the psychic which is in the simultaneous integrality of
Time and Timelessness.
Yoga is to move from mind to spirit, from part to the whole, from Time
and Timelessness to both in Time.
When consecration crosses occupation into a semblance of substance, one
tastes Timelessness in existence. To know concretely that we make our
world is, in a sense, to cross Time. Crossing Time, one can enter
Timelessness of simultaneous integrality.
Time ― Trade representing itself to the govt. Timelessness ― A GOOD king
decreeing for people. Simultaneity ― Trade developing abilities to rule
or a GOOD king feeling for the people as he feels for himself.
To act in our daily routine in a self-forgetful bliss is the
simultaneous Time. (MSS, miscellaneous

Changing Our Time Perspective
Higher Consciousness that Overcomes Time
Mental, Vital Change that Overcomes Time
Moving from mental thought to mental consciousness, one sees that Time
and Space are conquerable.
Mind can abridge Time by changing its conception.
Mind that refuses to go to the past or future is its counterpart that
overcomes Time in a similar measure. Overcoming Time in the right sense
of the word is to be ecstatic in the present.
Reversal of attitude in the vital, giving up prejudice of the mind are
similar efforts to overcome the effects of Time in the vital and mental
planes, because these attitudes and prejudices are accumulations over
time, being the products of Time.
Prayer and Consecration that Overcomes Time
Prolonged, intense effort like non-stop prayer is the overcoming of the
effects of Time in the physical plane.
Consecrating the past and anticipating the future are ways of abridging
Time.
When mind knows Time is its own creation, it acquires the ability to
rise above its mastery.
Time heals whether a wrong done was true or not, as they are truths of
Time. Mother heals and upgrades instantaneously, as She is beyond Time.
Concentration, Depths, Inner Being that Overcome Time
Consciousness extended inwardly is Time. By withdrawing the extension
and concentrating, we overcome Time. By giving up the past and pouring
ourselves more fully into the present, Time is overcome.
As Silence deepens the Timeless reveals in Time. One can see in one
second the potentials of several years.
Time duration is necessary when we are in the Becoming, not when we are
in the Being.

and future. (MSS, various extracted)

Experiencing the
Ever-Present in Work
Here are several thoughts on how to bring the Power of Now to
our daily work.
-Focus on the work before you, not something else you
want to do, or resorting to indolence. This the key starting point.
-Focus completely on the present, without thought of
past or future.
-Patiently do that work, with no apprehension,
tension, and demand.
-Do the current work as carefully and perfectly as
possible. Fully absorb yourself in trying to reach that perfection. This
is another key.
-Consecrate the work to bring life's conditions under
control.
-Move to the depths and feel the silence and
timelessness, and work from that poise. Meditation or concentration can
support that effort.
-As a result of living in the depths over time, you
will have intuitions of the past influence on the present, and
intimations of where the present is going in the future. You will thus
know at each point what to do in the present.
-Maintain fully positive attitudes at each point.
-Be cheerful throughout.
-The goal is to create the greatest Efficiency in the
work -- i.e. the greatest results with the least effort in the shortest
period of time.
-In the peace and demands of the Now, we can create
ultimate perfection.
-It will be accompanied by breakouts of sudden good
fortune - i.e. Life Response.
Time
Perspective, Consciousness and Life Response
-Time is relative
and subjective.
-Shifting our
time perspective to the positive causes life to quickly respond with
good fortune.
-The more mindful
we are, the more able we are to shift our time perspective to the
positive.
-We can change
our time perspective my being more punctual, by being patient, by
maximizing our use of time, and in other ways. Doing so tends to quickly
gain the cooperation of life.
-We want to bring
about the greatest efficiency of time by overcoming it.
-In essence, when
we bring higher consciousness to time, we overcome its limitations.
-Moving our
consciousness within enables greater mindfulness, and the right
decisions related to time that evoke good fortune.
-Whenever we make
the right change in consciousness, we attract outer results that reduce
time, as the future moves into the present. Right consciousness
overcomes the slow results of time; i.e. ordinary limits of cause and
effect.
-We can call in
the spiritual Force, which will alter the outer conditions of life,
overcoming the limits of time, as results quickly move to us in the
narrow time frame of the just after here and now.
-The
Spirit, the Divine is in the timeless plane. Forms of life, like us were
created to bring the timelessness of the Spirit into the time demands of
life so that it is conquered.
-A
spiritual goal of life is to bring the inner spiritual power of
timelessness to bring the future into the present, conquering the slow
unfoldings of time.
Consciously Abridging
Time
Because I had problems with
Internet communication on my computer the other day, I had a
little extra time on my hands. I then thought that rather than
waste it, why not take care of one of the items on my long-term
agenda -- upgrading the memory on my computer.
When I arrived at
the service area at the local
electronics superstore, I was greeted by four individuals
in line ahead of me. Though that might not seem so bad, consider
the fact that they were there to have their laptop computers
serviced, and at the time, there were only two technicians on
duty. Since each customer took ~15-20 minutes to service, I was
looking at a half hour or more wait. I had been on this slow
moving service department line before, and I had seen the look
on the faces of the people 'patiently' waiting. Well this time
it was no different, as the person in front of me had that same
silent, but frustrated look.
Because I had lost landline DSL
connection to the Internet, I was forced on that day to use a
wireless Wi-Fi connection at McDonald's and Starbucks. Now as I
stood in this slow moving line, I thought that rather than stand
around nervously for half hour waiting for my turn, I could make
use of the wireless service that might be available in the
store. And so I pulled out my computer from its case, and
awakened it from sleep mode. I then discovered that a free
Internet connection was indeed available in the store. However,
when I tried to connect to that Wi-Fi service, it did not work.
And yet when I put the computer back in its case and looked
around, I noticed that the line in front of me had suddenly
moved two spaces. That normally would have occurred over 15
minutes, but instead it happened in fewer than 5. I then
understood that because I shifted my attention away from the
'problem' of the line, life responded and moved it along
overcoming the duration of time.
Now I sensed I was in one of those moments
where I had the presence of mind to overcome and master life's
conditions. Taking that cue, a moment later I made the conscious
decision to give up all concern about the lengthy wait. As a
result, the line moved again two places in less than 5 minutes.
When I was then called to be serviced, I had in essence been
served in less than 10 minutes, when it would ordinarily take 30
or more.
When I first explained my need to the
technician, he said that the added memory could be installed
within two or three hours. I thought that was too long, and
asked him if it could be done sooner. Sensing my time
constraints, he then said his tech people could do it in 45
minutes. I thought that was fine. I could after all go out to
get something to eat and return in the allotted time.
He then told me it would cost around $140
for 1GB of memory, which was the maximum additional amount my
computer could hold. After filling out the paperwork, I was
prepared to leave, but then stopped myself from assuming that
our communication was over. As a result, I held my ground and
waited for him to speak. He then proceeded to tell me that if a
technician didn't return within the next ten minutes, he would
install the memory himself. I naturally accepted this new course
of action.
Now sensing that time was disappearing
before my very eyes, I again held myself back from rushing off.
He then said he wanted to check the memory configuration in my
computer before he did the work. After a quick check, he told me
that the computer would only take a 2gb chip, not a 1gb one,
though either way it would only add 1gb of usable memory to the
system. For a moment, I thought that would mean that the price
would now double, but he surprised me by saying that it would
cost less for the 2gb
chip because it was on sale! Thus, my bill now went
down by nearly $50,
despite the fact that I used a bigger chip. In the back of my
mind, I thought that small wonders were rapidly accumulating
through my conscious effort.
When I then finally went off for the
allotted 10-minute period, I came upon and watched a beautiful
video on one of the flat-panel TVs called 'Above California.'
When I arrived, the film was just showing my favorite spot in
the state -- Mt. Shasta, the 13,000-foot snow-capped cylindrical
peak in the north. I saw that as a good omen now, even as I have
often thought of Shasta peak as a symbol of ultimate aspiration
in life, including my own. Feeling light, lilting, and joyous
because of all these events, I then returned to the technician
who was in the process of completing the installation for me. At
that point, I did not want to force the conclusion of the
transaction, for I knew that right inner attitude could attract
additional small miracles.
A few minutes later, the transaction was
completed and I got the additional memory that would speed up my
computer. In addition, I was equally happy because a potential
half hour or more wait in line had been cut by over 75%; that an
originally proposed 2 to 3 hour installation was reduced to a
mere 10 minutes; and that my bill was substantially reduced from
the original quote. I clearly perceived that it had all happened
because I made conscious use of time through efforts of inner
detachment, calm, and patience at various points along the way.
It was a powerful reminder that if we make use of our inner
power, time will shift from being an obstacle and adversary to
becoming an ultimate instrument and ally.
Shifting Our Time Perspective and the Response of Life
The
other day I drove to nearby Palo Alto, home of Stanford
University and the surrounding wealthy community in the heart of
Silicon Valley. My plan that afternoon was to get hands on
experience with the IPhone, which had been released the day
before. After a wonderful experience using the device, I exited
the store and sauntered up lovely University Avenue, a
tree-lined street adorned with dozens of shops, ranging from
boutiques and cafes to bookstores and technology centers. As I
walked up the boulevard, I felt quite happy and relaxed. Adding
to the lovely atmosphere was the perfect, cloudless, mild
weather that graces the region this time of the year.
In
the back of my mind, I thought about the idea of obtaining some form of
sweet -- perhaps a candy bar. And yet I was enjoying my slow amble up
the avenue too much to want to disturb matters. A few minutes later, I
thought about the fact that I had 30 minutes or so remaining in my
parking slot, which still gave me enough time to continue my leisurely
walk. And so I continued happily on my way.
Then
at one point, I realized that though I had walked a ways, I had still
not yet found an outlet for the candy bar I was after, which in turn
caused slight consternation. It was at that
point that I decided not to waste any more time, and instead focused on
finding a store that had the object of my desire. Not a second later, I
looked up and saw a large Walgreen's outlet
directly in front of me. It was precisely the store I was looking for,
since it had the greatest variety of candy in the entire area! I was
amazed that as soon as I thought of doing something about my situation,
the store immediately appeared in my line of site! In fact, out of
dozens of stores in the area, it was the only one that my eyes
fixed upon when I lifted my head! And so without hesitation, I quickly
headed over to the store and found what I was looking for. In fact, I
was so excited about the subtle "life response"
experience that I just had that I also purchased a small pad and some
fancy pencils in order to capture the event that just transpired!
In
essence, what happened was that when I changed my perspective about
time, life instantly responded with sudden good fortune. When I
shifted from allowing time to leisurely go by to focusing on
creating results as soon as possible, the store instantly
appeared before me. By changing my intention about time
- i.e. to create quick results -- I attracted
a result that itself abridged time, as the store suddenly came to my
attention.
When
we make an effort to focus on, conserve, or condense time, life
immediately responds with improvements in its conditions. In the above
incident, I consciously tried to narrow time, to focus it, concentrate
it, and life instantly moved in my favor, enabling me to obtain the
object of my desire. This suggests that there is a profound relationship
between our perception of time and our ability to accomplish in life;
or, more specifically, our ability to accomplish suddenly and abundantly
through the onset of a life response event.
Let
me give you another example of this phenomenon. A number of years ago,
the Christmas/New Year holiday season was fast approaching, which
ordinarily meant that my contract consulting and training work would
slow to a trickle. However, this time rather than accepting the social
norm that business invariably must decrease during this period, I
decided that it should flow like any other time of the year. Immediately
after changing my psychological position, I was flooded with new
work -- completely filling my holiday schedule! Keep in mind that I did
not make any outer effort to precipitate this most unexpected turn of
events. Life simply responded on its own to a change in my
attitude. When I shed the old habitual belief, and embraced the idea
that work could come at any time -- including the imminent
holiday season -- life immediately moved in my favor. Or to put it
another way, by conquering my own view of time, I opened the portals of
possibility, enabling vast results to descend on me in virtually no time
at all!
Most
of us have perceived the subjective nature of time somewhere
along the line. Though the clock may tick in regular, fixed intervals,
in reality time is a rather subjective experience for us. Sometimes time
appears to move quickly, while other times it can seem to last forever.
Even modern science - including Albert
Einstein
- has told us that time is relative. For
example, one day a friend tells me that she was bored at work, and so
time seemed to drag on forever. Another day, she tells me that she was
very busy, and so time seemed to just fly by! In this way, our
experiences of time seem to depend on the quality of our perceptions and
the way we interact with life. Here's another example: have you ever had
a wonderful conversation with a person and then realized that several
hours had passed by, when it only seemed like minutes? The enjoyment and
mental stimulation affected our perception of time. In each of these
experiences, the way time unfolds for us depends on our psychological
state. When our emotions and thoughts are fully engaged in a work or
matter, life seems to move swiftly, but when we are locked in a room
with nothing to do, it seems to last forever.
My
goal here is not so much to analyze the nature of time, but to show that
through our psychological relationship with time, we can attract
powerful positive results from the world around us. When I shifted my
perspective and tightened my time perspective in the candy bar incident,
life instantly responded with positive results. Likewise, when I
shifted my time framework by embracing the idea that work could occur
during the holiday season - expanding my
notion of what was productive time -- life also instantly responded, and
brought work that filled up that completely filled up that timeslot. We
see from such cases that
whenever we shift our time perspective to the positive
-- through more focused intent, by aspiring
for its maximum use, or by expanding its productive capacity -- life
tends to immediately respond in our favor.
For
example, consider two other aspects of time that we are all familiar
with - punctuality and patience. If, I shift
from being habitually
late to work to being punctual -- a decidedly different
relationship with time -- life quickly responds to that effort. E.g. out
of nowhere, I am suddenly offered a higher paying position, or an email
arrives informing me that a long delayed project has suddenly come to
fruition. When we change our attitudes about time, time begins to work
in our favor, by attracting the infinite possibilities of life into the
here and now!
Likewise, if I shift from being impatient to being patient
in a given situation -- another form of "time
shift" -- life will also quickly respond. For
example, just recently I was on line at the supermarket, and perceived
that I was becoming slightly irritable due to the length of the check
out procedure. However, being mindful in that moment, I was able to
catch my disturbed feeling, and instead focused on being patient. Hardly
a moment later, the woman in front of me bolted out of line when she
realized that there were other items she needed to shop for,
substantially shortening the line in front of me. In similar situations,
I have seen a second bagger suddenly appear on the scene to speed up
packing, or a stuck checkout conveyor belt suddenly start moving! In
each case, the response from life came after a change in psychological
reference -- from being caught in time (i.e. impatience), to moving
outside the bounds of time (i.e. patience).
These
episodes give further proof that that when we move to a higher plane of
consciousness relative to time, we immediately gain the cooperation of
life. In fact, the life response themselves come in a form that overcome
the limits of time, as they rapidly, even instantaneously descend upon
us!
The
key to eliciting these powerful results is to be stationed in that place
within where we are able to make the right psychological adjustments
concerning time. When we shift our center of consciousness from the
surface of life to a deeper poise within, we not only become mindful of
the possibilities and choices unfolding before us, but we are able to
make the right decisions in those moments --
including the right time-related decisions --
that quickly attracts powerful positive results.
There
is also something we might call the :final
frontier of time" It is where we are able to
bring the timeless dimension of life into the time-bound plane we live
in -- changing the very nature of our existence. When we move away from
our surface preoccupation with the visual and auditory sense data, and
discover our deepest poise within -- culminating in discovering our very
souls -- we reach a plane where time ceases to function. When we then
act from that plane, -- i.e. when we bring the timeless energies into
the details of our daily lives -- we become complete masters of the
outer life. We have conquered time from within, and through that
process, unleash the infinite potentials of life.
Experiencing the Eternal Present through Higher Consciousness
And to a consciousness higher than Mind which should regard our past,
present and future in one view, containing and not contained in them,
not situated at a particular moment of Time for its point of projection,
Time might well offer itself as an eternal present.

the miraculous instantaneousness of the
supreme divine Transformation. (Sri

An Experience of the Cessation of

wonderful
It was if the dimension of time no longer existed in life, in active
life. It had fallen away. I wasn't experiencing the timelessness of a
meditation, but the experience of life without the element of time in
it. It is very hard to explain. It was as if I were living in the
future, and the dimension of time was no longer in the universe.
Reading The Life Divine gives
this experience. Space
was there but no time.
A good distinction.
Experiencing life without time was what I experienced. Time was no
longer a dimension of life. It was not time, or timelessness, but a
consciousness without the dimension of time.
excellent
It lasted 5 seconds. I felt as if something had been removed or was no
longer there in those seconds. That as a result of the elimination of
time there was a freer life. (I later thought that perhaps space too
could disappear from life.
yes. Space is outer; you had an
inner experience.
Therefore, it is NO time.
The experience can start either outside or inside.
Something like this. Very hard to explain. I have never experienced
anything like it. Perhaps you did experience these things and felt them to be good
feelings. Now that it is more pronounced, it is inescapable.
This on the heels some six months ago here I experienced what seemed
like no consciousness GOOD when I walked up the side of the hill during
a training break, which A explained as a realignment of consciousness.
The two experiences were not similar except in the sense that they were
both something completely new.
If R distinguishes between Silence, Peace, and Timelessness, a new phase

Time and Space
Time is inner, subjective. Space is outer, objective.
The
Ever-Present
When we move to the depths, we come closer to the experience of the
ever-present, as the mind broadens into a vaster awareness of the
present moment, which can also include objects related to the past and
even the future. [The ever-present is the second of three states of the
Triple Time Vision of Eternity, i.e. "The Third Dimension."]

Timelessness and Infinite Abundance of Being
Since the Being, the Divine
Source of creation is timeless and One, when we invoke that

and negate the negative friction of the past. Likewise, through the

finite because the Being is infinite in its essential nature.
We are created formations of Brahman able to release Its
infinite, timeless Nature in our existence.

Our Limited Perceptions of Space, Matter
Only Mind Sees Parts,
Divides Matter and Space; All is Really Unified
Sri Aurobindo tells us that this perception of the infinitesimal
part is only a product of mind's tendency to divide. The Being is not
divided, even the physical being.
Similarly mind divides matter and space. It perceives
matter as separate objects within a field of space. Einstein noted that somehow
the space and the matter are related in a way that matter seems to bend space.
Suppose instead that we consider space and matter as a single continuum. Matter
represents those aspects of the continuum in which the energy is in motion and
space represents aspects in which the energy is at rest and therefore
imperceptible (since we can only perceive active energy with the senses, not the
absence of it) or in which the energy is vibrating at such a subtle level that
it is imperceptible. All remains unified. (MSS)
Perceptions of Space,

- Space and time are continuum of energy and substance
- (Perceptions of) Space and time are relative to the level of the
consciousness of the viewer
- Matter and space are one; of the same energy. Matter is energy in motion,
space is that energy at rest.
- Mind sees spiritual substance as material substance through the senses, and
mental substance through pure mind.
- (Perception of)
the part is only a product if mind's tendency to
divide. The being, even the physical being is one.
- There is no inner and outer when we move to the very highest consciousness.

Infinite Space Beyond the
Physical that is Available to Us
We tend to think that the days of the pioneers are over, the land rush
is complete, the last continent has been settled, no more free land for
the asking. But without going into outer space, which is a physical
diversion from evolution, already we see that new types of land (space)
have been created that are virtually unlimited in extent. New York Times
sells their 'land' for $20,000 per square foot per DAY. The Superbowl
sells 'land' for perhaps ~$20,000 the second in time rather than per
day. Second Life sells it-I don't know how high the prices go-in a
potentially infinite virtual world where proximity to known high traffic
locations has a value. Apart from the commercial potential, it shows
that sensory or perceptive space is far more precious than physical
space. The how much more value is the psychological space we can
create-valuable as a creative contribution to humanity.
(MSS)
The Source and Nature of Space
Reason for
Space and Time
Space and Time are created so that the One (the Divine/the Absolute) as
subject can experience itself as object. [Supermind would now have the
means to create the formations of comic determinants through the
triplicity of subject-object-method; such as lover-love-beloved,
knower-knowing-known, etc.]
Reason for Space and
Time
Space and Time are created so that the One can become the Many.
Matter and
Space of Same Energy
Matter and space are
one; of the same energy. Matter is energy in motion, space is that energy at
rest.
Space and Time
According to Sri Aurobindo, all reality resides in and issues from the
Absolute [the omnipresent Reality, Brahman in the
East]. By a process of Self-conception, the Absolute manifests
Being/Existence (Sat), i.e. Spirit and all
that issues from it [including Consciousness Force,
the planes of existence, energy, and the universe itself.]
The principle of time emerges when Being/Existence
extends itself subjectively to become Consciousness-Force (Chit). The principle
of space emerges when Being/existence extends itself
objectively to become an object to its own Self-Conscious experience. Space and
time are different expressions of the same reality.
Space is the self-extension of Being/Existence
in the form of constant or persistent movements that give the appearance
of stable forms in contrast to Time, which is the same self-extension of Being/Existence
in the form of changing
movements. The same Being/Existence moves in
two ways, as stable pattern of movement (space) and changing pattern of movement
(time). The stable pattern appears as the backdrop for that which is changing.
(MSS, with additions)
On Space
-Space

of stable forms.
-Space

-The

looking at itself in essence and principle.
-The
fundamental truth of Space is the infinity of the Infinite.
The Nature of Space and Time
Space is Being looking at itself in status.
Time is Being looking at itself in movement.
Experiencing All Points
of Space in Any Point
And to the same consciousness not situated at any particular point of
Space, but containing all points and regions of itself, Space also might
offer itself as a subjective and indivisible extension, -- no less
subjective than Time. (Sri Aurobindo)

Finite
By giving up mental opinions, vital attitudes and physical habits, one
tries to emerge out of the finite into the Infinite. (MSS)
The Infinite Emerging from out of the Finite = a "Miracle"
In the field of spirituality, the phrase "the Infinite emerges out of
the finite" occurs constantly. In human life, such a phenomenon is
understood as a miracle. (MSS)
Create Infinitely
Since the Infinite Spirit is the source of all creation, we can utilize
that same spirit to create infinitely.

Opening to the Psychic Being
Opening to the psychic
being, the spiritual soul within can initiate movements of timelessness
in time, the infinite in the finite, and the Being in the Becoming.
Response from Surrender
Surrender
of one's self to the Divine enables the spirit Being to enter the life
Becoming, which enables the infinite potentials of life to rush into the
present as miraculous sudden, abundant, responses from life.
Infinite Potentials of Life and the
Force
Sri Aurobindo believed
that we can abridge 30,000 years of human evolution into 300 or even 30
years if we consciously evolve our nature, and aspire for and open to
the spiritual Force. In that process we open to the infinite potentials
of life; which can enable stunning new developments in technology, in
products, in any work, institution, social entity, or field of life.
When we bring in the spirit in our lives we literally bring in the same
infinite powers that created the universe. By opening to the Force the
infinite potential for accomplishment, success, and joy defies our
wildest imagination.

Bringing
out the timeless in time brings out its spirit. Evoking the infinite
from the infinite does the same. Going into the depths and gathering the
Force above are the decisive instruments for these movements, which

Untitled Our role is to find spirit
in life; to find the spiritual Being in ourselves (whose origin is the
Divine) in the Becoming, i.e. the activities, actions, circumstances,
events, and acts of life. We evolve and evolve life by discovering the
Being in the Becoming. In that process we discover the Infinite of the
Divine in the finite details of our existence, and the Timelessness of
the Divine in the time-bound moments and periods we experience in life.

Organization, the
Force, and Efficiency of Results
Organizing a work or an endeavor one level higher than its current
status, creates substantial improvements of results relative to that
effort. E.g. the likelihood of success of an activity may be doubled or
more. That is the power of organization. Opening to the Divine Force
however opens enables infinite possibilities, where productivity
and success can be 10, 100, a 1000 times to infinity greater. It also
enables the decent of one or more spiritual properties into the
atmosphere of the work, such as Truth, Knowledge, Power, Peace, Oneness,
and Delight. This is the power of Spiritual Organization, a super
organizing mechanism; an instrument of the Divine Force.
Practical Concept of Infinity
A key to a higher future
life is to see the practical concept of infinity; that the infinite can
actually emerge in any finite moment in time; enabling the vast future
results to appear in the present, thereby overcoming our notions of what
is possible in space and in time.
Practical Concept of Infinity in
Our Lives
If we realize the Absolute
we can create anything infinitely. This is a practical concept of
infinity. Surrender to the Absolute enables this practical concept of
infinity; i.e. from that relation we can create anything. (Paraphrase of
MSS)
Infinity
is a Practical Concept
It is infinite Brahman that created this world of infinite joy.
Infinity is not only a Spiritual concept or Mathematical concept.
Infinity is a practical concept.
(MSS)
Practical Concept
of Infinity
In the very beginning of creation, there was Infinity and Eternity, says
the scriptures. God is described as an infinite Being living eternally.
Mathematics says that the Infinite does not increase or decrease. The
Infinite multiplied by any number, say ten, remains Infinite. Even when
the Infinite is divided by ten, it remains Infinite. It is an important
concept in mathematics.
Spiritually too, the Infinite is equally important. Infinite minus
Infinite equals Infinite is the dictum of the Upanishads. The Gita puts
it as, "It moves not, but it is always ahead
of you." Again, the Gita says,
"It is indivisible. It is there in the divisible things
undivided."
Sri Aurobindo ascribes to
Infinity, the concept of it, the most significant value in life.
I call it the Practical Concept of Infinity. It means Infinity that is
so important to spirituality and mathematics is
ever-present in life.
In other words, one who realises this truth in life will have the
power to multiply things in life infinitely.
Should he realise
the truth of the Infinite in life, everything an individual does will
multiply.
In the life of spiritual aspirants, it expresses as: 1)
abridgement of Time, 2) raising the level of one's work, and 3) making
the end result available at the beginning. (MSS, extracted, and slightly
modified)
Methods that Enable the Practicality of
the Infinite
We can
move life outside us in a great way if we
learn to concentrate on spirit.
Practical Concept
of Infinity
This
principle essentially means that you can accomplish and succeed in life
to literally an infinite degree if you make contact with and then open
yourself to the spiritual powers of the Divine Reality.
Going within in
essence enables you to begin to really realize the principle of the
"practical concept of infinity;"
that all of the infinite potentials of life can be made real, can be
embodied by you in your life as a practical reality. Infinite abundance
and success and joy can really happen. By going to the depths, we begin
to move from what we perceived as a finite life to the real experience
of an infinite life, as infinite abundance, prosperity, achievement,
success, and joy.
Inversion to Logic of the Infinite
Anything can be approached from above or from below. What is sensation
to the vital is fact to the mind. Logic of the finite changes into logic
of the Infinite when this inversion takes place. (MSS)

Happiness vs. Joy, Delight of Being
Happiness vs. Delight
Happiness is felt when life's conditions are favorable. Delight is
there under all conditions, positive or negative because the reference
is deeper within beyond contradictions.
Delight and Joy vs. Happiness Delight and joy of being
is inner; happiness is outer. The former comes from connection to the
depths of our being down to the personal evolving soul; the latter from
the ups and downs of life.
Outer vs. Inner-Based (True) Happiness
Happiness is based on outer circumstances. Inner happiness (i.e Joy,
Delight of Being) is based on one's higher inner conditions, no matter
what the outer presents.
Happiness of the Surface vs. Joy and Delight of the
Inner Happiness is of the
surface consciousness; joy and delight are of the inner consciousness.
Spiritual
Happiness
Spiritual happiness: calm and smiling, nothing can disturb it.
(The Mother)
Human Happiness
Happiness is Delight of being (Ananda) experienced at the human level of
the vital. It is less than Delight.
Happiness vs True Happiness (Joy, Delight)
Ordinary happiness comes and goes. It is our reaction to the inputs
of life that come from the outside. It is up and down. True
happiness is Joy of Being, which comes from within,
unencumbered by the exigencies of life around us.
Human Joy vs. Divine
Joy
The character of human joy is that it has a counterpart of sorrow. The
divine Joy is unalloyed, unsullied. It is Self-existent. It does not
need the balancing factor of its opposite sorrow. Our enjoyment comes
out of the satisfaction of our desire. The divine Bliss cannot be
matched by any enjoyment man knows. (MSS, reorganized)
Happiness vs. Joy/Delight of Being
Happiness is human. It can
turn into its opposite. Joy and delight of being is spiritual. There are
no opposites of these.
Satisfactions vs. Happiness. vs.
Fullness
We know satisfaction that is the opposite of frustration, and happiness
the opposite of sorrow. Satisfaction comes out of reaching what we aim
at. Happiness is given by success. All these are positive, negative
emotions of life, actually lower life from the point of view of the
Spirit. Spirit, when it emerges, gives a FULLNESS. It is an inner
fullness.
The Nature of Delight
of Being
Thoughts on True, Inner Happiness (i.e. Joy,
Delight of Being)
-Ordinary happiness comes and goes.
It is our favorable reaction to the events of life that come from the
outside. Because life is unpredictable, this type of happiness is
unstable. True happiness is Joy of Being, which comes from
within, unencumbered by the exigencies of life around us.
-The major cause of unhappiness is seeing life through our
ego-consciousness. When we move away from ego and separateness, we
develop the possibility for true inner happiness.
-The happiest of people -- i.e.
those who experience Joy and Delight of Being -- are those who are
self-giving towards others; who listen to others, who are focused on the
concerns and needs of others, who literally lose themselves in the lives
of others.
-Ego and self-givingness are two
opposites. Ego brings unhappiness or outer happiness. Self-givingness
gives inner happiness. The act of self-giving perpetuates joy.
-Living on the surface, overwhelmed by the inputs of data streaming in
from the outside through our five senses, the smoothness and oneness
with the environment and others gets overshadowed. From the surface, our
mind gets cluttered, and we move towards separateness, self-centerdness,
i.e. ego.
-Surface living and the separateness, ego it engenders leads to negative
emotions -- like fear, worry, guilt, ill-will, impatience, and many
other harmful qualities.
-True Happiness derives from a
deep connection within, all the way down to our True Selves.
-The most joyful of people are spiritual people, whose orientation is
inward, reaching toward their True Self and Soul being, which reflects
outward toward embracing others and the world around them. This creates
inner happiness and joy.
-When we are more aware of our
lives, ourselves we become more inwardly happy. Through deep knowledge
of the workings of life , as well as a deeper center of consciousness,
we enable this mindfulness and awareness that supports joy and delight
of being.
-How did this come to be? The
Spiritual Reality on the road to creating a universe of forms, divided
into Existence, Consciousness-Force, and Delight. Delight which mirrors
our potential Joy and Delight of Being was absorbed in creation. In
order to create a multiplicity of forms wit the greatest variety,
positive and negative was created, and there was loss of Consciousness
and Delight for this purpose. Also, we emerged through evolution
as divided beings, with happiness and pain, positive and negative
circumstances in our lives.
However, when we find our True
Selves within, we begin to connect to, become One with the universal
plane -- i.e the environment and the people around us. There we shed
ego, separateness, and engender connectedness. As we give to others, Joy
springs forth. As we discover our True and higher self, our evolving
soul within, Joy comes to us. As we shed our ego and negative
propensities, Delight spreads throughout our Being. As we connect to the
transcendent spiritual Reality, we experience ultimate joy -- the
Delight and Bliss of the Creator, once lost in creation, now
rediscovered.
Not Seeking Repetition Enables Delight
If you can look at all things - at a
face, a bird, or anything that gives delight -
if you can look at it without wanting the experience to be repeated,
then there will be no pain, no fear, and therefore tremendous joy.
(MSS)
Inner Happiness
Inner happiness (i.e Joy, Delight of Being) is based on one's higher
inner conditions, no matter what the outer presents.
Delight of Being is Spiritual
-Delight and
joy of being is inner. Inner is spiritual.
-Joy
and delight of being is spiritual. There are no opposites of these.
[like sorrow, as in ordinary happiness.]
-The
divine Joy is unalloyed, unsullied. It is Self-existent. It does not
need the balancing factor of its opposite sorrow. (some

Discovering Our Higher Nature

Rediscovering the lost Delight of the Supreme Being in our lives -- by

Spiritual
Joy
Success makes for happiness; failure gives us sorrow. Sri Aurobindo says
success and happiness are sought after by lower human emotions. Pious
people do their duty regardless of success or failure. They are
invariably happy, rather filled with a sense of contentment. There are
other people who are always found filled with JOY. They spread joy
around. Such people are found at all levels of life. Inner Joy,
permanently established, is one symptom of a realised Soul. We do not
hear of pensive Saints or other religious people who are depressed.
Invariably they are happy. Some of them have a characteristic sweet
smile.
Inner joy includes all the higher attributes of life, e.g. power,
health, money, status, wealth, etc. The JOY that I speak of is
spiritual JOY. I said it is inclusive of all human needs, comforts
and affluence. Invoking the spirit, one attains to INNER JOY. If he is
not entirely successful, at the next level he attains material
Prosperity.
There is one more dimension to this. I rarely speak of it. It is called
Spiritual Prosperity, generally difficult to attain. It is attained by a
Spiritual discipline. The only such discipline here is NOT to take
egoistic initiative. No initiative of ours is free from ego. (MSS,
somewhat modified)
The Overwhelming
Experience of the Soul at Various Planes
There is a phenomenon of the SOUL overcoming our human goodness as well
as human smallness, coming out of its shell, charging our being with
intense joy of an extraordinary nature.
It has the capacity to fill and saturate the nervous system with that
joy.
Should it reach the Mind, the Mind becomes light, shedding its usual
weight, and grows bright, taking us to the occasion of what is usually
described as mental joy. Such persons are blessed.
It has a further dimension too. The body of flesh which usually lives in
darkness is sometimes capable of opening to this invasion of a heavenly
vibration. At its touch, there is a thrill.
It is the thrill of spiritual gratitude the whole Being feels to the
Divine. At its peak, people find that human individual in ecstasy. One
can usher himself into this condition of beatitude. (MSS)
True Knowing and
Delight
To truly know something enables one to experience Delight of being.
Delight and Energy
Creation
Joy and delight of discovery releases in turn a
great energy in
ourselves; mental energy in our minds, vital energy in our emotions, and
physical energy in our bodies. This new found energy can then be
channeled and utilized to take us to even higher vistas in life.
The Heart that
Always Opens to the Joy that is Spirit in Essence
However ossified the heart is, it readily opens to a touch of JOY. For
the heart Joy is the Spirit in essence. (MSS) [Example: all those who
were hardened opened to the cheerfulness and joy brought by Pollyanna.]

Cosmic Reason for
Delight
When one experiences delight of being, one is fulfilling the purpose for
which the Divine created the universe, delight of being; i.e. for us to
experience the delight through the discovery of our higher nature.
Making
Our Purpose -- Delight -- Conscious, and Fulfilling It through Spirit
There is the subconscious or subliminal
knowledge that the purpose of life is for Delight. We can make that a
CONSCIOUS knowledge, and therefore seek it out. When we come to
experience the Spirit, including its attributes of inner Peace,
Love/self-givingness, deep Knowledge and Wisdom, and Creativity in our
daily lives, we realize that Delight,
that
Bliss of
living, which is the raison d'etre
of our existence.
Rediscovering the Delight of
Creation
The Spiritual Reality
on the road to creating a universe of forms, divided into Existence,
Consciousness-Force, and Delight. Delight which mirrors our potential
Joy and Delight of Being was absorbed in creation. In order to create a
multiplicity of forms wit the greatest variety, positive and negative
was created, and there was loss of Consciousness and Delight for
this purpose. Also, we emerged through evolution as divided beings, with
happiness and pain, positive and negative circumstances in our lives.
However, when we find our True Selves
within, we begin to connect to, become One with the universal plane --
i.e the environment and the people around us. There we shed ego,
separateness, and engender connectedness.

Inner Fullness, and
Richness
Inner Fullness We know satisfaction that is the opposite of frustration, and happiness
the opposite of sorrow. Satisfaction comes out of reaching what we aim
at. Happiness is given by success. All these are positive, negative
emotions of life, actually lower life from the point of view of the
Spirit. Spirit, when it emerges, gives a FULLNESS. It is an inner
fullness. When that inner fullness emerges, we find mind is incapable of
thought, vital life is incapable of sorrow or worry. Just around us
there is no failure to be witnessed. The successes we see give Joy, not
happiness. JOY is a richer vital fullness, before which happiness pales
into insignificance.
The human being is called an embodied being of the Spirit. Spirit is the
one Reality. It is Infinite and Eternal. It existed in the beginning.
The Truth we worship as God or more than God is preceded by the Spirit.
In philosophic language, Truth is the objective state of Spirit which is
subjective. In ordinary language, Spirit comes into our life as Truth.
So Truth is Spirit to us, Truth is our God.
This Spirit wanting to be born on earth took a body which we call as
embodied being. It acquired a mind and vital. We call the body into
which the Spirit came our body. It is true our body too is Spirit but it
has other parts also, viz. life and mind. On top of them spirit, too -
Atma - is another part of the embodied being.
All the parts of our being - spirit, mind, life and body - are really of
the Spirit because the whole world is made up by the Spirit. It is the
beginning, it is the end and the middle. But that Spirit has the
appearance of mind, life and body. When we say the Spirit emerges in us,
it means the Original Spirit rises to the surface of the body, mind and
life. Therefore the FULLNESS. When the fullness is inner, life is full
of prosperity. When it is outer, Life becomes YOGA.
(MSS)
Thoughts on Fullness,
Richness
Fullness is of the being.
Spirit coming to the surface or discovery of Nature
in the depth is Reality grasped in a wider fashion. That makes for
spiritual fullness.
Fullness for the mind can be interested occupation.
Vital and body too can feel fullness likewise. But the spirit emerging
is fullness which is always rich and sweet.
Satisfaction is mind's maximum; Fullness is soul's
flowering.
Behind the heart is the fullness.
Fullness is made possible by the vibration of LOVE
and the principle of surrender.
Fullness comes by including others in you.
Fullness is not reached by concentration but by concentration
maturing into consecration and surrender.
Fullness generates richness.
Fullness saturated is richness.
Fullness is the deepest part coming to the surface.
Richness is that depth enjoying to the last drop.
Inner richness that grows to fullness crossing the
consciousness into the substance indicates the evolving spirit
awakening.

Being and Becoming
(top)
How We Can Bring Being into Becoming The Divine Reality is an
essence of Being. Our lives in the universe is the form of Becoming.
Spiritual life for the individual is to bring the Being into the
Becoming, the spirit into every nuance of our daily lives.
Follow the Becoming;
Accept All Everything (in life) is
useful and necessary. We must be in the movement of the eternal
Unfolding and Becoming, accepting all. (Paraphrase of The Mother)
Untitled One ultimate goal of
becoming the evolutionary spiritual being is to overcome the limitations
of the physical consciousness and the subconscious.
Untitled Opening to the psychic
being, the spiritual soul within can initiate movements of timelessness
in time, the infinite in the finite, and the Being in the Becoming.
Discovering the Mental, Vital, and Physical Aspects of the Personal
Evolving Soul
Who am I? Am I my thoughts, my feelings, my physical sensations? Or am I
my True Self, my personal evolving soul? It is the latter. But how can I
escape from this triple tyranny of what I now perceive myself to be. We
can begin by offering, i.e. consecrating our thoughts to the higher
power, to the Force. Since thoughts are not really ours to begin with
since they enter us from the outside, by offering them, we are not bound
by them, and as a result take a step within, to the mental part of our
personal evolving soul. That becomes one pillar of our new true
foundation. At a later point we can similarly offer our vital feelings,
and then the physical acts we are engaged in, which will open up the
vital and physical aspect of the personal evolving soul. Eventually we
come to fully know ourselves as this True Self; which in essence bring
the spirit into life, the Divine Being into the Becoming of the universe
we live in; unleashing life's infinite potential for us; which
transcends all limitations of space, time, and the finite.
Simultaneous Time
Eternity
When we live in the
psychic we live simultaneous time eternity. This is because the psychic,
as the agent of the soul spark of the Divine, resides outside time in
timelessness (i.e. no time), even as it stands behind our active lives
in the timeless Being of the time-based Becoming of our lives.
Response from Surrender
Surrender
of one's self to the Divine enables the spirit Being to enter the life
Becoming, which enables the infinite potentials of life to rush into the
present as miraculous sudden, abundant, responses from life.

spiritual life begins when he outgrows that limitation. (Paraphrase of

The Real Heaven and Hell 2
Perhaps we can say that in the afterlife one takes those negative and
positive propensities, which are deposited in various planes of

the personal evolving soul can either rest or continue on its journey
through rebirth. Heaven and hell may be distortions of this reality for
purposes which may not be altogether wholesome.]

To help
one's self or another in pain or illness you can send light from the
heart or call down showers of peace from the Force.
A Daily Exercise
One simple
on-going, daily exercise, that is in itself sufficient for personal
growth, is to turn one's hostility and bad-will into good will or even
gratitude; and worry, fear, and pessimism into faith and cheerfulness.
We can all understand these since their negative origins are primal;
i.e. physical.
Yoga of Consecutive Moments
We can try an experiment, where we simply observe our inner status and
consciousness from moment to moment for a certain period of time, then
gather all of the facts, and make the concerted effort towards
improvement. We can do this in continuous cycles --absorb, understand,
take right action -- until we have grown well beyond our current status,
and, if we wish, take it all the way to our own transformation. It can
be the yoga of Consecutive Moments. Who will stand forward and take up
the challenge?
Controlling Flashes of the
Negative Vital
The
spiritual-oriented individual does not give in to a sudden feeling of
anguish, angst, distress, and dismay. He catches himself and let's it go
by. This is the minimum required of us along the spirit path. It is but
one element in the control of the rash, impulsive, impetuous, and
defiant elements of our vital/emotional nature.
Untitled
Fundamentalists go within into their faith of physicality (a paradox),
perhaps indicating that we are being compelled to move even deeper into
the higher rational realms of mind, and to a deeper faith based on our
True Self, in order to discover forces and powers that will enable
higher harmonies to emerge out of the darkness.
To Do in the Ascent, To
Be in the Descent
We discover ever higher ways of doing in life, starting with the body's
instinct, and rising to the mind's wisdom, and the spirit's truth. To
do then is in the
ascent (i.e. from matter to spirit);
whereas to be begins in the Spirit, the Being, and comes down to
our minds and to our bodies in the descent.
True Saintliness and
Wisdom
True
saintliness is to want and realise what the Divine wants for you, and
true wisdom is to unite with Him so that you can clearly know what He
wants of you and for you. (The Mother)

Offering
The gopis loved Krishna and Krishna desired to bless them with
divine knowledge. To do so he needed to receive that offering
which symbolised knowledge. Butter symbolised knowledge in the
occult world. The gopis had no idea of offering butter to
Krishna, as they were ignorant. To them, butter was a milk
product.
Sometimes the Divine has to steal an offering from an ignorant
devotee to confer on him the blessings He chooses. So Krishna
stole the butter. This is the significance of Krishna stealing
butter. On rare occasions, Mother found ardent devotees
oblivious of this requirement of token offering. At such times,
She asked for a small service or a particular flower. Then the
life of the devotee flowered. (MSS) |

How We Are God (Brahman)
in Action
The first thing we can understand is that we are not "under God," but we
are God; i.e. evolving God. God (aka The Absolute, the
Omnipresent Reality, Brahman) is that which enabled the universe, as
well as that universe itself. But if that is true, then how come there
is not the perfection in us, in God's "body," as there is allegedly in
God's pure spiritual essence as Being? I.e. why is there suffering here?
The answer is that at the current planes we live in and center our
consciousness in -- mainly the physical and vital/emotional life plane
-- we perceive and live in the divisions and dualities of existence. But
at the higher realms of clear rational mind and upwards to spiritual
mind and beyond, we see the purpose of these conflicts and
contradictions; that they serve the purpose of ever-emerging higher
harmonies.
In fact, as we
rise to these spiritual planes above sense-mind, and as we live in a
deeper consciousness within, we more accurately see where each conflict
and contradiction of life we encounter is leading towards. In that way
we can speed up the resolution of the higher harmony. We can perceive
where each side in a conflict is really growing, developing, and
evolving towards, giving one a keen insight into their nature, enabling
us to develop powerfully creative strategies for improvement, that when
acted upon lead to perfect and vast results. This enables the higher
harmony to emerge quickly and abundantly; which means we have
accelerated time, and history; we have brought the future into the
present; and have brought the infinite results into the Now that we
formerly perceived as finite in scope. We have overcome Nature's slow
course of resolving the conflicts and contradictions of life; and
through our higher consciousness, accelerated the development and
emergence of the higher harmonies.
To live this way,
we serve our great purpose in life; in the universe. We become, in one
sense, an Active God in the form of a person in the universe. In that
way, we truly are God in life, God in action.

'Have
confidence in yourself' is popular advice with both a false and a true
meaning. It depends upon what is meant by the 'self.' If it means a
seemingly separate personality which seeks power over others, which is
always demanding something, the advice becomes just another road to
ruin. But if we take the self to mean an awakening point of cosmic
consciousness, which steadily expands its vision of reality, the advice
is accurate and inspiring. (The Daily Guru)
From Division to Oneness; Contradictions to
Complements
When we experience all
existence as One, the Oneness of the universe relative to spirit; when
we know the Omnipresent Reality, Brahman; then we see that the
divisions, dualities, and separations of existence are not so,
but are really relations of Oneness.
Power of Living
in Depths
We can
learn to live in the depths or stand in the light of the spirit above so
that we can experience -
-the timelessness
of the eternal beyond the changes of time
-the oneness and continuity of the past and future as it relates to the
present (i.e. the experience of the present not in isolation but in
oneness with its precedent past and its unfolding future.)
-the unfolding of moments of eternal timelessness in the ever-present.
Being in Becoming;
The Great Formula of Infinite Life
Sri
Aurobindo, the Indian seer and sage, brought the knowledge of
evolution to the static bliss of communion with the Being that India
has known for three millennia. With this new integrality, the
spirit entering the events of our lives to release its infinite
potential is now a conceptive reality that we can truly live. We
now have laid out before us the complete knowledge of how to blend the
Being of spirit into the Becoming of the acts, events, and circumstances
of our lives. The path is there for our taking to enable the ultimate
evolutionary possibilities for life on earth, including ultimate
accomplishment, success, and joy.
Clairvoyance vs.
Spirit
The clairvoyant whose vision extends into the past as well as the future
does not have the capacity to relieve people of their problems. That is
a greater power of the Spirit.
Attaining Higher
Consciousness Permanently by Offering our Defects to the Divine
To reach the higher consciousness permanently, one must consider the
defective part of our nature as a problem and try to get rid of it.
Constant awareness of our low consciousness generating constant
aspiration for the Divine leads to higher consciousness permanently.
(Paraphrase of MSS)
The "Miraculous" Power of Spirit which Isn't
Spirit is Power. It has more power than Mind or Body. We call the power
of Spirit miraculous. As long as we are not in the plane of the Spirit,
its power looks like a miracle to us. In its own plane, the character of
being miraculous disappears. Miracle is the observation of events in one
plane of the play of forces from another plane. For one who has not
heard of a camera or seen a photograph, photography is a miracle. It is
not so to us who know what it is and how it works. (MSS)
